The Department of Music in the College of the Arts seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Music Education for the 2024 fiscal year. The position is a fiscal (12-month), tenure-track faculty position beginning July 1, 2023. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, maintaining scholarly productivity, and participating in service at the department, college, and university levels.

The department is made up of 30+ faculty/artist teachers and over 160 music majors and minors. The department presents over 150 musical performances for the public each year. In addition, several of the major performing ensembles of the department travel throughout Georgia, the Southeast, and abroad, performing for schools, civic groups, and as part of community concert series. The Department of Music recently expanded into Powell Hall, a newly renovated, historically
preserved, state-of-the-art music facility; featuring new administrative offices, a stunning 200-seat recital hall, faculty studios, rehearsal studios, and practice rooms. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinating graduate programs in music education for the BA Music Education track degree and the MAT degree in Music Education;
  • Build positive working relationships with elementary and secondary music teachers in the area and in the state;
  • Foster VSU as a resource of expertise and mentorship in this music education area;
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of elementary music methodologies;
  • Teaching general music, foundations, and choral curriculum at the graduate level and undergraduate courses supporting the general education curriculum as needed;
  • Coordinating student teacher placement for practica and clinical practice with the Department of Music and the College of Education and Human Services;
  • Collaborating with the College of Education and Human Services to advising and mentor all education students and MAT majors;
  • Completing assessments for accreditation and program review;
  • Work closely with department faculty and administration to review and recommend program curricular changes;
  • Additional duties may be required based on credentials and the needs of the department.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal degree in Music Education; (Ph.D., DMA, or EdD in Music Education) by June 30, 2023;
  • A minimum 3 years of successful teaching in P-12 schools, including choral and general music; 
  • A record of music education teaching at the university level in both graduate and undergraduate programs, including general music and music education foundation courses;
  • Knowledge of regional, national, and specialized postsecondary accreditation standards, practices, goals, and teacher licensure;
  • Knowledge of current research in music education;
  • Capacity for scholarly writing and professional leadership;
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, as well as scholarship;
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant’s career stage;
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting;
  • A record of mentoring students of diverse backgrounds;
  • A strong record of student teaching supervision;
  • Record of ability to maintain positive and productive relationships with P-12 schools;
  • CAEP and NASM reporting experience and a willingness to learn accreditation processes;
  • Experience with recruitment and retention;
  • Familiarity with online/hybrid degree program structure and curriculum development;
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS);
  • Certification in one or more of the following Kodály, Orff, Dalcroze, and Music Learning Theory;
  • Evidence of contributions/service to the development of previous department/university.
