The Department of Health Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Northern Arizona University invite applicants for a full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor (Doctoral degree required) level in Public Health. The position begins August 2023. This position will perform a workload with teaching in Health Sciences and an emphasis of research and scholarship in CHER/SHERC. The successful applicant will have the expertise to teach courses on three or more of the following topics: Social Determinants of Health, Research Methods & Evaluation, Community Based Participatory Research, Environmental and Occupational Health, Health Policy and Management.

Job Description

This is a full-time, tenure eligible faculty position, requiring a balance of research, teaching, and service. This position in the department of Health Sciences will also be an integral part of the Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative (SHERC), a dynamic, Research Center for Minority Institutions at Northern Arizona University funded by NIMHD. The long-term goal of SHERC is to eliminate health disparities among diverse populations of the southwestern United States by focusing on building research capacity in biomedical, clinical and behavioral sciences at NAU. We are uniquely positioned to do this at NAU, given our longstanding commitment to serving underrepresented students and citizens in our region, our strong working relationships with tribal, Latinx, and rural communities, and our dedication to conduct health equity research that directly improves the lives of the people we serve.

SHERC is housed in the Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) in the College of Health and Human Services at NAU. We seek applicants for a full-time (9-month) tenure-track or tenured research and teaching faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to start in the Fall of 2023. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience leading multi-year population health research projects and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Scholarly work should reflect best practices regarding statistical analysis and reporting, study design, study recruitment and other indices of optimal and transparent research. The successful candidate will: 1) maintain an independent research program that is supported by external funding and produce peer reviewed science in the field of public health; 2) contribute to the teaching mission of the CHHS including the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate, MPH, and PhD students as well as post-doctoral fellows; and 3) perform service for the department, center, college, university and profession.

Minimum Qualifications

• Earned doctoral degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Psychology, Health Promotion, or a related field (ABD considered with conferral of degree by start date).
• Experience with quantitative or mix-methods research design
• Experience working with Indigenous, Latinx, rural and/or underserved populations
• University or community college teaching experience as the primary instructor of record

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of methodological knowledge base and contributions to clinical and translational research that complements existing CHER/SHERC faculty areas' of expertise with an emphasis on health equity
• Evidence of effective collaboration regarding research design and analysis approaches using health-related administrative data and clinical data sets, large-scale observational data, national surveys, comparative effectiveness, randomized trials, cluster randomized trials, and/or community-based trials
• Demonstrated experience and commitment to health equity research
• Experience in building multidisciplinary teams and developing multi-investigator grants and programs
• Experience mentoring undergraduate, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows in health research
• Excellent communication skills with a wide variety of audiences, including healthcare professionals, community stakeholders, sponsors, and/or policy makers
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity
• Two or more years teaching in a university setting (online and/or classroom setting) as the primary instructor of record.

The Department of Health Sciences serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students within the College of Health and Human Services. The department is a true multidisciplinary unit, providing six different undergraduate degree programs in five unique disciplines (Public Health, Nutrition and Foods, Allied Health, Fitness Wellness, and Physical Education Teacher Education), along with the Master of Public Health degree, and collaboration in an Interdisciplinary Health PhD degree between the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Health Sciences Department offers courses that encompass numerous aspects of health and wellness and provides health and fitness courses for students in other degree programs across the university. Additionally, the department offers curricula in traditional residential and online formats.

Flagstaff has a population of about 70,000, rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40.

With its elevation of 7,000 feet and four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
