The American University of Iraq - Baghdad (AUIB) seeks exceptional faculty for AUIB’s new College of Education (CoE). As an American-style university, the CoE founding faculty will be innovative instructors and culturally responsive educators committed to preparing teachers.

AUIB seek faculty who:  

  1. Teach foundational education courses in teacher licensure programs at the undergraduate level.
  2. Collaborate to design teacher education pedagogies to support novice teachers as they develop commitment to and skills for equitable and ambitious teaching practices through embedded simulations and/or other practice-situated immersion experiences.
  3. For the new College of Education, we are looking to hire five to six faculty that have expertise in at least one of the following domains:
    • Curriculum and Instruction
    • English Language Learning
    • Literacy and Reading
    • Math and Science Education
    • Special Education

AUIB’s CoE is working in partnership with Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development  to develop  higher education for academic excellence and build a stronger teacher workforce in the region. Supported by a two-year U.S. State Department grant, Peabody College will lead AUIB’s efforts in designing and launching the College of Education with a focus on teacher training and development by Fall of 2023.  AUIB faculty will come to Peabody College for a two-week residency.

 

Role of Faculty 

Duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  1. Teach introductory and advanced education courses for undergraduate teacher education major and non-major students.
  2. Advise students on matters that relate to their course schedule and academic success.
  3. Participate in program, college, and University meetings, various committees, and recruitment activities. 
  4. Design and supervise practicum, field experiences, and student teaching.
  5. Assist in program and  college  planning and preparations.
  6. Contribute to ongoing program review, assessment, and evaluation.
  7. Observe the rules, regulations and policies that govern teaching, research, and interactions with members of the university community.

The CoE faculty report directly to the Dean of the College of Education

 

Qualifications and Qualities

The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal qualities:

  1. Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in areas of education from accredited universities.
  2. A record of teaching experience in a university setting.
  3. Familiarity with the American system of higher education and K-12 education; familiarity with international education systems.
  4. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication in English.
  5. Willingness to collaborate with colleagues.

Personal qualities – Enthusiasm for cross-cultural learning and innovation; engage in the learning process with integrity, trust, and curiosity.

 

Safety and Security 

The beautiful and historic AUIB campus is located on a secure 643-acre campus, formally the Al Faw Palace, just outside of Baghdad’s city center and near the Baghdad International airport. The university and its administration are committed to everyone’s safety and security; the university has specific protocols and procedures in place, including a security perimeter surrounding the campus, and other ongoing security processes such as vetting all individuals coming and going from campus, as well as on-campus security. 

Once on campus, there are restaurants and cafes, a faculty club, sport facilities, shopping, health clinic, and other amenities that make everyday life at AUIB and in Baghdad comfortable. Faculty and staff live on the secure campus in university-provided housing.  Faculty and staff have access to a bus system, golf carts, and/or bikes to move around the campus.

 

Procedure for Candidacy

Applications should include, as separate documents, a complete CV or resume, a detailed letter of interest addressing the themes in this profile, a scholarly writing sample, three professional references and prior teaching evaluations. Finalists will be asked to submit copies of passport data page, all formal academic degrees and certificates, and copies of transcripts will be required.
