Assistant Custodial Services Manager - Facilities Services

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

Classification Title: Administrator I

Salary Range: The anticipated salary range for this position is $5,500 - $6,100 per month.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

About the Department/Position:

Custodial Services is committed to maintaining, cleaning, and protecting the interior portions of the university's facilities. We focus on providing a safe, attractive, functional, and comfortable environment for our faculty, staff, students, and visitors that will contribute to a positive learning experience and student success.

Under the general direction of the Manager of Custodial Services, the Assistant Custodial Services Manager will supervise the day-to-day operation of the Custodial area. The incumbent will perform supervisory, administrative, and other duties as required, to meet the operational needs of the campus. The incumbent will be responsible for effectively utilizing the budget and other resources allocated to the custodial department. The incumbent will establish cleaning, and sanitation standards and procedures, and set internal guidelines; ensures the standards are met or exceeded. They must conduct daily inspections of the custodial work assignments and projects. The Assistant Custodial Services Manager will oversee the day-to-day operation and the long-term planning of the campus as described above.

The incumbent may be required to work alternate shifts and weekends as needed.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Management and supervision of all custodial employees and all related contract support services.
  • Plans and organizes custodial operations serving all areas of the campus.
  • Controls and standardizes custodial procedures, materials, and equipment and investigates problems or potential problem areas.
  • Meet with campus customers on a regular basis to ensure services are meeting expectations.
  • Provides leadership on all aspects of custodial maintenance.
  • Evaluates performance, and develop and conduct staff training programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or a related field with two (2) - five (5) years of increasingly responsible custodial operations experience with at least one of the five years serving as a supervisor or lead custodian.

  • Additional lead custodial experience that has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully obtained and applied the knowledge and abilities indicated may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Able to manage the daily operation, maintenance, and coordination of custodial/janitorial services in an industrial/commercial/educational environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively with multiple levels within an organization.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff and management.
  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Computer literate and familiar with productivity software such as MS Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • Knowledge of labor-management agreements and accompanying labor relations procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience managing in a union environment in a college or public sector maintenance department is preferred.

  • Budget management and automated work order system experience in the maintenance environment. Experience with employee evaluations is also preferred.
