Position Overview

Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university. Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committees as requested. Prepares departmental reports as requested. Engages in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions
The University of Central Oklahoma School of Design invites applications for a Full-time, Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor in Graphic Design. This position will include academic, creative, and service responsibilities in a School of Design offering B.F.A. degrees in Graphic and Interior Design. UCO Design seeks dynamic and motivated candidates with a high level of creative industry, social engagement, and a commitment to department participation.

Preference will be given to candidates who are also able to demonstrate experience with:
  • Digital Design and Emerging Technologies such as: web or mobile applications, AR/VR, UI/UX
  • Print/digital production techniques and technologies and file management
  • A strong knowledge of typography
  • A strong knowledge of brand design
  • A strong knowledge of industry-specific software, such as Adobe CC
  • A strong knowledge of foundational level hand and digital skills
Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate courses in Design Foundations, Computer Graphics, and other graphic design courses as needed. This position requires a commitment to engage in research/creative/scholarly activity in your area of specialization at local, regional, national and/or international levels. This position will also require service commitments to the university, college, department, and professional organizations; participation in shared governance of the department; the recruitment and mentorship of undergraduate design students; and active participation in the advancement of the School of Design.

Qualifications/Experience Required
An earned MFA degree or PhD requiring a minimum of 60 graduate hours awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement. **NOTE** MFA or PhD candidates that have degrees in progress are eligible to apply as long as the terminal degree is obtained and submitted by the time of employment.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred
  • MFA or PhD in Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design or related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the time of hire.
  • Minimum of two years university teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design (agency experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in student mentorship.
Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected. An earned terminal degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). **NOTE** If the terminal degree is not obtained and submitted by the time of employment, the position rank will change to TT-Instructor.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to teach courses in graphic design, design foundations, digital and print production, digital design, and emerging technology. The successful applicant will have the knowledge, skill, and ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students in the College of Fine Arts and Design.
