Brief Description of Duties

The Division of Sciences and Mathematics (DSAM) within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry with a strong research background and the ability to teach undergraduate chemistry courses designed for a diverse population of students. Chemistry is among several degree programs offered in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics (DSAM). This program offers the American Chemical Society (ACS) certified BS degree in Chemistry. The incumbent will be required to prepare and deliver relevant curriculum to students in their courses, using a variety of teaching methods to include, but not limited to, lecture, class discussion, labs, and projects. Experience advising students and supervising undergraduate research projects are also necessary. Candidate must possess a demonstrated record of scholarly publications and collaborating with faculty on a variety of scholarly activities. The faculty member is expected to participate in program, division, and college service activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach two sequenced physical chemistry courses
  • Conduct research in specialty areas of chemistry.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and assessment of the chemistry program.
  • Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
  • Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
  • Provide students an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the institution, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria, and an outline of appropriate University policies.
  • Present enthusiastic, well prepared, organized, and clear lessons consistent with the course syllabus.
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide relevant and engaging assignments that facilitate real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Provide students with timely information and feedback on their academic progress in the course.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  • Participate in professional development training on an ongoing basis.
  • Keep abreast of discipline related trends in instruction by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Participate in program, division, and college service activities.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry is required. A specialization in Physical Chemistry or related field is preferred.
  • Some teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Evidence of scholarly publications and presentations at discipline-related conferences and meetings.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to work collaboratively on research projects as well as serving on program, Division, and College-wide committees.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is

limited or absent.
