Overview
The Building Automation Controls Technician will be responsible for various building automation systems monitoring/alarm management, incident coordination, system diagnostics, programming, and system maintenance. Additional support for security and fire systems. The technician will coordinate with other groups within the Department and throughout the Laboratory to ensure long-term, safe, and efficient operation of the building automation system and end devices Develops solutions to enhance or enable controls of lab wide systems. Responsibilities
Building Automation Controls Technician will be responsible for Building Automation Systems (BAS) monitoring, programming, and troubleshooting of site-wide control systems. Core Duties 75%:
- Monitors multiple BAS for system alarms and unsatisfactory conditions.
- Provides initial triage and troubleshooting of issues identified from system alarms, calls, or other sources.
- Review BAS status, queries and reports to identify unsatisfactory conditions, track issues to resolution.
- Retrieve point trend logs and analyze for anomalies.
- Follows SOPs for documentation and work order creation.
- Dispatches field technicians and assists with troubleshooting.
- Create programs to ensure peak operation of all
electro-mechanical equipment.
- Support testing, repair, and troubleshooting of Simplex fire alarm system.
- Review Security System status, queries and reports to identity unsatisfactory conditions, tracks issues to resolution.
- Perform Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High School Education or GED equivalent
- AAS or Technical training in HVAC, Electronics, or Automation or similar program.
- Basic proficiency and understanding of Windows® based software applications.
- Demonstrated proficiency with email, MS® Office Suite products, Google Suite products, and related desktop/handheld devices and applications required.
- Proficiency with Web Based Applications including Maximo, Google Apps for Business, Siemens Insight, and Desigo certification.
- A strategic goal of PPPL is diversifying the community of scientists and engineers, ensuring equitable access, and making the STEM fields more accessible and inclusive. With this in mind, we will take into consideration equivalent work and personal experiences as well as efforts in education, outreach or other related service activities.
- Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience with the troubleshooting, service, programming and repair of building automation systems.
- Demonstrate understanding and technical ability of DDC control theory and building operations, to perform investigations of complex HVAC system controls and functionality issues, evaluate alternate solutions and provide sound recommendations to supervisors, shop personnel and others.
- Siemens Insight and Desigo experience in both service and installation of end devices, and front end making scheduling and setpoint adjustment, override and release points, review point configuration, view, and export trend data.
- Reads and understands blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts.
- Ability to write complex programming for HVAC, and lighting systems.
- Performs point-to-point system check outs and participates in new and renovated system startups. Ensures proper software setup, programming, and communication with server(s).
- Provides technical support, direction, and guidance to end users and other trades personnel where applicable.
- Possess knowledge in the functionality and usage of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and motor frequency drives.
- Working knowledge of fiber optic testing, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain good communication between departments and other shop personnel. Maintain good customer service relationships.
- General knowledge of the National Electric Code, Life Safety Code, OSHA and standard industry practices. Conform to industry standards concerning safety, lock-out/tag-out, inspections, and operations when dealing with electrical systems. Maintain a high consciousness of safety for all personnel and areas involved.
- AAS or Technical training in HVAC, Electronics, or Automation or similar program.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Work in confined spaces, at heights, and exposure to plant hazards (steam/electrical/mechanical/radiological).
- Ability to be on-call, and work overtime, off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.
