The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford (UICOMR) seeks an experienced health care leader to serve as Associate Director, Rural Health Workforce and Center Development in its National Center for Rural Health Professions (NCRHP). This is a full time, academic professional position and reports to the Assistant Dean for Rural Health Professions. The successful candidate will be a key member of the NCRHP leadership team and will provide input into the center’s direction, management, and overall operations.  The Associate Director will be integrally involved in day­ to-day and long-term activities of the center, including center operations; budgetary decision-making; center staffing; center direction; policy initiatives, the development of white papers and peer-reviewed publications; grant writing and implementation; educational initiatives; and development of community partnerships. The scope of the position goes beyond the Rockford campus to statewide, national, and international programs and initiatives. This includes the management of grants in collaboration with the Business Manager.

The regional campus in Rockford is part of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, one of the largest medical schools in the United States. The University offers outstanding opportunities for development of its students, faculty, and staff.  Rockford is a progressive, mid-sized metropolitan area in northern Illinois, west of Chicago.  The city has minor league baseball and hockey, numerous golf courses, award-winning park system, three botanical gardens, an art museum, theaters, a revitalizing downtown, and a river walk. Public and several private school systems are available. Rural living is accessible within 15 miles of the campus.

The National Center for Rural Health Professions, certified in 2003 by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, strives to meet the health care needs of rural residents and their communities in Illinois, around the nation and throughout the world. The NCRHP programs include Rural Medical Education (RMED – a selective longitudinal medical school experience designed to promote rural practice), Illinois Area Health Education Centers Network (AHEC), Student Pipeline program, Global Health Partnership, and the Rural Health Professions (RHP – a supplemental education for medical, pharmacy, and advanced practice nursing). The NCRHP is one of three centers nationally that collaborates with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization to advance medical education using social accountability principles, focusing on primary care services for underserved communities and rural populations.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford is a national leader in rural medical education.  Founded in 1971 to address the health care needs of the people of Illinois, the UICOMR has trained over 1,900 physicians. In 1990, UICOMR developed the Rural Medical Education (RMED) Program and has graduated approximately 300 students and presently 50% of each entering medical school class is comprised of RMED students.  Sixty - six percent of RMED program graduates practice in towns with less than 40,000 people, making it one of the most successful rural medical school training programs in the United States. The NCRHP has established relationships with 30 rural health systems across the State of Illinois and offers more than 50 rural clinical teaching sites. Having expanded its rural focus to include additional health professions programs (pharmacy and nursing), the NCRHP has plans to further expand its health science programs to include dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, and public health.

Minimum qualifications include a minimum of a master’s degree in public/community health, health policy, behavioral or social sciences, or a related discipline along with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in upper-level administration that includes staff, program, and budget management.  Must have knowledge of and experience working with rural health workforce issues, an understanding of public and community health concepts, demonstrated success in securing and managing external grant funds, and experience with program evaluation.  Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are essential to this role. Strong preference for candidates with a PhD in public/community health, behavioral or social sciences or a related discipline; experience presenting at professional conferences; successful publication record and experience conducting community-based research; experience working in health policy; knowledge of curriculum design, development, implementation, and evaluation in higher education, and knowledge of SPSS statistical software package.
