The University of Medicine and Health Sciences-St. Kitts (UMHS) invites applications for a faculty position in Behavioral Science.

The successful candidate will be part of the team teaching the behavioral science course which is taught in the second year. Because UMHS courses are team taught, faculty members will have time to engage in research and other scholarly activity. The UMHS academic year has three semesters; therefore, teaching responsibilities occur throughout the year.

Responsibilities include:

    Developing and providing students with approved syllabi and learning objectives. Organizing, preparing, and regularly updating course content. Delivering effective lectures utilizing a variety of teaching techniques and state of the art teaching technologies. Preparing and administering quizzes and examinations. Focusing on student success by being available to students during non-teaching time. Serving on faculty committees. Supervising students in a variety of activities, including but not limited to, problem based learning activities as well as activities in local clinical settings.  Developing the Behavioral Science program in line with the requirements for success in USMLE examinations. Maintaining office hours and provide academic counseling and advisement Participating in activities assigned by the department chair and/or University administration

Minimum Qualifications:

    Passion for teaching. Doctoral degree (earned Ph.D. or PsyD) in clinical psychology or MD degree in psychiatry. Three to five years’ experience teaching in a recognized and accredited medical school preferably in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, or the UK. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English.

 

Course Description:

MBEH 0830 Behavioral Science 5 credits
Behavioral Science stresses the complex relationship between psychological make-up and experience, by providing a knowledge base for normative and non-normative human development throughout the life cycle. The course also introduces the student to the behavioral basis of clinical medicine by focusing on common behavioral problems and the circumstances that evoke important behavioral / emotional responses. The concept of culturally competent care will be defined, and the basics of recognizing organic and functional psychological disturbances are described. Workshops on realistic clinical problems are an integral part of this course; sexual dysfunction, bereavement, suicide and sociological disorders receive detailed attention. Additionally, the student should develop increased insight into personal functioning and feelings and develop the skills needed to act as an empathetic and effective interviewer and behavioral change agent.  An important part of this course focuses on psychiatric disorders along with the psychopharmacological interventions. 


 

Salary and Benefits:  The position is full time and the salary is commensurate with teaching experience and degree.  The faculty member is provided with an excellent health care plan which covers both US and St. Kitts health care.   Since there are three fifteen week semesters the faculty member has seven weeks’ vacation a year which comes as the last two weeks in May, August, and three weeks in December.  Faculty are also provided an annual one week leave with expenses to attend a pre-approved professional convention. UMHS offers a traditional four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The university operates year round and offers three semesters per calendar year which start in January, May, and September. The University is accredited by ACCM which has adopted the LCME standards of accreditation.  ACCM is recognized and approved by the Department of Education through NCFMEA.  Students complete four semesters of Basic Science then transition to our fifth semester in Maine for ICM 2 and a 15 week USMLE review program.  After passing Step 1 students transition into the Clinical Program which is completed at over 20 affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.   To graduate, students must successfully complete the UMHS medical program and pass USMLE Step1 and 2.  Our graduates have obtained residencies throughout the United States and Canada.  Please visit our website for further details about our academic program and  student successes (www.umhs-sk.org)
