The Assistant Dean for Nursing reports directly to the Dean of Health Sciences and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the nursing department with oversight for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs; develops and expands learning opportunities for students; implements the academic policies and procedures of the University, assists with development and implementation of policies and procedures within the nursing department; teaches; addresses the needs of faculty/staff/students; and assists with strategic planning and budgeting for the department. The Assistant Dean also performs special projects as requested by the Dean. Nursing Programs include the following:
  • Undergraduate Pre-Licensure Program (BSN)
  • MAGELIN Program (MSN Graduate Entry)
  • MSN Program with two tracks: Education, and Leadership
  • DNP Program

The responsibilities outlined below are for both the Assistant Dean of Nursing Position who also serves in a faculty role:
  • Supports the Mission of the University and the Mission, Philosophy, and Strategic Plan of the Nursing Programs and Programs within Health Sciences.
  • Participates in regular, special, and standing committees and other activities of the nursing programs.
  • Contributes to the development, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum using the Organization Framework for Effective Learning, the overall and specific program outcomes, curriculum plan, and each faculty’s experience and specialization in nursing.
  • Participates in identifying appropriate learning resources to enhance the curriculum.
  • Contributes to the assessment and revision of the nursing curriculum and policies.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of the department’s strategic plan and budget in the planning and decision-making regarding major expenditures.
  • Acts in accord with the department’s professional and ethical standards as developed and communicated by the faculty.
  • Accepts leadership responsibilities within the School.
  • Represents the nursing programs on committees, other activities, and in the community.
  • Participates in the recruitment of qualified faculty and students.
  • Supervises the activities of teaching assistants, if necessary.
  • Ensures regular meetings of the faculty to facilitate communication and to solicit faculty participation with regard to planning, implementing, and evaluating the curriculum.
  • Develops and implements new faculty orientation plan.
  • Participates in the evaluation of faculty, staff and program directors.
  • Facilitates faculty development, including opportunities to enhance educational competencies.
  • Establishes the faculty and teaching assistant course load. Creates and assigns workload within Ohio Board of Nursing parameters in collaboration with program directors.
  • Implements the University policy relating to the evaluation of faculty, teaching assistants, and preceptors in collaboration with program directors.
  • Certifies to the OBN in the prescribed format for each student who is an applicant for licensure in Ohio that each applicant successfully completed the requirement of a program and the date the applicant completed the program requirements.
  • Follows OBN policies and procedures.
  • Verifies that each nurse teaching a course in the program holds a current, valid license.
  • Maintains resources, including but not limited to classroom and skills laboratory equipment and supplies necessary for students to successfully complete the program.
  • Oversees the work of all nursing program directors to accomplish the department of nursing’s mission, goals, and program outcomes.
  • Meets regularly with the program directors (individually and as a group) to facilitate departmental operations.
  • Participates as an active member of the Nursing Advisory Committee.
  • Teaches selective courses within area of expertise.



Earned doctorate in nursing or doctorate in related field plus a master’s degree in nursing; prior teaching and administrative experience in a baccalaureate or higher degree program; credentials for a tenure-track position at the University; expertise in grant writing and/or research; excellent skills in leadership, supervision, written and oral communication. Must have a current unencumbered license to practice in the state of Ohio as a registered nurse, five years of practice as a registered nurse, two of which have been as a faculty member in a registered nursing education program.


The individual must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.


Work is primarily indoors, but requires the individual to be outdoors when traveling between local campus buildings or off campus.

Individual may have to visit healthcare facilities where exposure to harmful substances may exist, however, this is infrequent.

Individual may be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones, office machines, and nearby oral communications among University personnel and/or students.


Ability to walk, sit at a computer for long periods, stand, stoop, lift or carry objects that weigh less than 10 pounds.

Manual dexterity to operate a computer and handle copy/office machines.

Visual acuity to read documents appearing on computer screen, hand-written documents, and print copies.

Ability to communicate in person via email and by telephone.

Ability to travel as necessary.
