The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is looking for an Application/Software Architect to design and develop software infrastructure solutions toward the goal of leveraging Federated Learning to augment clinical workflows. The candidate will start with image computing and analysis projects and is expected to work on multiple complex, business-critical application projects that may span and integrate a broad range of data types, systems, and school-wide business components as a project/technical leader. The candidate will ensure adherence to technical, quality assurance, data integrity, and security standards, and will be viewed internally and externally as a technical expert and critical resource. The preferred candidate would define application standards, methods, and best practices, and will work with individual labs to incorporate these in their projects. The candidate will manage and/or provide technical direction to internal junior developers, and also work with external vendors or other external software providers. The candidate will strategically (but also tactically) plan, organize, and manage projects, and also ensure dissemination of accrued knowledge via technical seminars and workshops. The candidate will provide leadership for component architecture design and software product evaluation.

Job Responsibilities
- Establish architecture, design patterns, policies, standards,
and best practices
- Design, develop, implement, and support software infrastructure
used for application development and delivery of Federated Learning
R&D activities, while providing technical direction to lead
contributors from individual labs
- Ensure quality deliverables/releases by contributing to design
sessions, coding, code reviews and adherence to technical, quality
assurance, data integrity, privacy, and security standards, in
coordination with internal initiatives and with public-facing
community-driven projects
- Develop design specifications, installation instructions, and
define software development standards for community-based projects,
e.g., provide guidance regarding APIs, CI/CD, and other best
practices for partner lab
- Coordinate and establish academic collaborations and industrial
partnerships
- Contribute material to relevant grant proposal
applications
- Plan, prepare, and organize knowledge dissemination, e.g.,
technical/educational “seminars”, presentation in
conferences
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum: Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or
equivalent combination of education and experience is
required.
- Preferred: Master of Science and 5 to 7 years of experience or
equivalent combination of education and experience is
required.
Essential Skills
- Software Development experience in a cross-platform environment
with open-source tools
- Federated Learning, privacy preservation and threat mitigation
techniques
- Deploying source code via containers, stand-alone tools, and/or
web applications
- Managing open-source codebases to further research/business
goals
- Machine learning and deep learning methods, technologies, and
tools
- Proven experience in effective communication with scientific,
clinical, and industrial stakeholders
- Contribute to the thought process and material towards writing
research grants
- Working with high-dimensional data
- C/C++, Python
- Proficiency in source control (git preferred)
- Proficiency in CI/CD
Preferred skills:
- Dealing with multiple external collaborators to further the
research agenda
- Developing and deploying deep learning projects in clinical
workflows
- Expertise in open-source deep learning libraries such as
PyTorch/TensorFlow/MXNet
- Working with sensitive data
- Designing tools that embody zero/low code principles
- Writing scientific manuscripts

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
