The Exploration Academic and Career Advisor plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team.

This position will be a professional academic and career advisor for freshmen and sophomore College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell students.

Primary responsibilities include academic advising of undeclared undergraduate students with regard to Liberal Arts Core and other curriculum requirements and introductory career advising on topics such as resume review, linked in profiles, networking and college opportunities, helping students navigate the processes associated with their academic plan and professional goals, guiding students to opportunities to investigate potential courses of study and declaring a major.

This role will require collaboration with an advising team to offer outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees.

As a member of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team, the candidate must embrace our University’s core value of inclusivity, ensuring that all students and constituents of the university are served in a caring, respectful, transparent, and authentic manner. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
  • 1-5 years experience in academic advising preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Deliver a broad range of advising services.
  • Requires knowledge of University degree requirements and policies and procedures supporting these requirements.
  • Experience working with college students and exposure to working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage confidential records discreetly and professionally.
  • Verbal and written communication skills including student and business correspondence, as well as the ability to use modern communication tools such as blogs, video and social media.
Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one and group advising to assigned undergraduates on academic and career topics including major and minor selection, dual majors, studying abroad, degree process, fulfilling academic and college requirements for graduation within specified time for chosen program of study. Resume, networking, alumni connections, career sector identification. Assist assigned cohort in discovering most suitable course/s of study in a timely and thorough manner with a view to assisting with retention and progress to degree completion for all assigned students. Maintain collaborative relationship with lead exploration advisors.

In coordination with lead advisors, deliver group informational workshops for students on a variety of topics including first year/sophomore decisions such as the internal transfer process, selecting a major/s, selecting a minor/s, studying abroad, etc.

Ensure students are on track for timely graduation by maintaining up-to-date and accurate student records, utilizing university wide software, ensuring requirements are met for all undergraduate students via degree audits and regular communications with advisees.

Evaluate and provide response to students interested in transferring to the college on which requirements will be accepted.

Understand, interpret, and provide rationale for academic policies and procedures and curriculum requirements to students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Identify in person and/or through faculty interaction and/or through Orange Success, at-risk students and provide support, guidance and referral to academic departments, faculty, support services (Center for Learning and Student Success, college tutoring options, writing center, math clinic, etc.), crisis intervention (Office of Student Assistance), personal counseling and therapy (Counseling Center), financial aid, residence life, Central Exploration Advisors within Central Career, and other University resources.
