Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab Invites Fall 2023 Applications for “Next Asia Policy Visiting Fellow”

Two visiting scholar positions are available to researchers from Asia. Submissions are due by March 1, 2023.

The Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL) is accepting applications for inaugural visiting fellows from the Asia-Pacific region to begin Fall Quarter of 2023. The lab seeks scholars and professionals with a PhD or a substantial record of professional achievement related to the research themes: “Talent Flows and Development,” “Nationalism and Racism,” “US-Asia Relations,” and “Democratic Crisis and Reform.”

SNAPL is a new innovative policy lab housed at the Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center (APARC) under the leadership of Professor Gi-Wook Shin. The lab is committed to addressing Asia's emergent social, cultural, economic, and political challenges through interdisciplinary, problem-oriented, policy-relevant, and comparative studies and publications. The visiting fellows will work alongside postdoctoral fellows, affiliated Stanford faculty, and students to conduct research on one or more of four themes listed above. Information about how to apply is available here, and the deadline to apply for Fall 2023 Quarter admission is March 1, 2023.

Duration

The appointment is for one academic year.

Stipend

Each visiting fellow will be offered $30,000 as a supplementary stipend. Visiting fellows are required to be in residence at the Center for the duration of the appointment and are expected to participate in Center and Lab activities throughout the academic year. The visiting fellows will participate in the annual SNAPL trip to Asia to conduct research and meet with collaborators and stakeholders. Additional privileges include access to Stanford research facilities, the opportunity to audit relevant University lecture courses without a fee (subject to permission of the instructor), and the opportunity to participate in events at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and elsewhere on campus.

How to Apply

Candidates interested in becoming visiting fellows must submit the following documents in English to the online application form: 1) a formal letter of request containing a detailed proposal of the work they wish to carry out at the Lab, including how s/he can collaborate with the lab team on research and publications; 2) a formal and complete academic CV, including a list of publications; and 3) two letters of reference. The letters of reference should be emailed to Ms. Irene Kyoung at ikyoung@stanford.edu by March 1, 2023. The candidate’s legal name and email address must be included on the top of each required document.

Selection Criteria

The application is open to candidates of all ranks with a PhD. There is a preference for mid-career professionals with a strong research and publication record. Visiting fellows are selected on the basis of prior professional achievements and the quality of research and publication proposals. All fellows must be visiting from and affiliated with an outside institution or organization in the Asia-Pacific region and must be proficient in the English language.
