Summary/Objective

The Assistant Director, Annual Giving is responsible for the implementation of the direct marketing calendar, including direct mail, e-mail, and social media. The Assistant Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conceptualizing, writing, and editing solicitations and annual giving stewardship messages/campaigns for direct mail, email, and social media; managing direct mail, email, and social media projects with vendors and internal constituents from concept to completion; requesting and preparing data for mailing lists; and analyzing results and reporting on progress of appeals.

Essential Functions
  1. Implement the overall direct marketing solicitation schedule, writing and designing mail and e-mail components of the annual direct marketing strategy. Work directly with vendors to carry out solicitation and mailings and work with information services to request and segment the data required. Work in Engaging Networks and with alumni communications colleagues to build, schedule, and evaluate solicitation emails.
  2. Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Alumni Communications and the Assistant Director, Advancement Communications, to develop engaging collaborative content for social media and email focusing on stewardship and the impact of giving, as well as for specific fundraising purposes such as giving days.
  3. Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Student and Young Alumni Philanthropy, and the Associate Director, Annual Giving to draft and execute marketing plans for the Senior Class Gift and Faculty/Staff campaigns.
  4. Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Phonathon Operations to create lead and follow-up correspondence with constituents solicited by the student calling program. Additionally, ensure phonathon correspondence and reminders are sent in a timely fashion.
  5. Other duties as assigned in support of the overall activities of the division of Development and Alumni Relations.

  • This position reports directly to the Associate Director, Annual Giving, and may supervise 1-5 student workers

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in training and experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in annual giving for educational institutions or non-profit organizations is required. Education, such as a Master’s degree, may contribute toward years of experience.
  • Understanding of and interest in social media marketing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, implement, manage and monitor multiple projects.


Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Experience with databases, constituent management software, HTML, SmartCall telemarketing software, and MS Access
  • Excellent communication skills to include effective and persuasive writing and editing skills, and interpersonal relationship-building skills. Experience with direct marketing using mail and e-mail.
  • Ability to build rapport with customers quickly.
  • Willingness to work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.
