Lecturer in Akkadian and Biblical Hebrew Language in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Jan 10, 2023
Deadline:
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania announces an opening for a full-time Lecturer in Akkadian and Biblical Hebrew starting in the academic year 2023-24. The appointment will be for an initial year with the possibility of annual renewal for up to an additional two years, contingent upon a satisfactory performance review and approval of the Dean, and includes employee benefits (medical, dental, vision). The teaching load is three courses per semester. Applicants for the position should hold a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies, Assyriology, Hebrew Bible, or a related field, and should demonstrate a commitment to both teaching and scholarship. Duties include teaching Biblical Hebrew and Akkadian, at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels (according to students' needs), holding regular office hours, participating in pedagogical development events offered by the Penn Language Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning, and working with faculty to develop and design the curriculum in ways that will appeal to undergraduate- and graduate-student learners. Ability to offer courses in other Semitic languages, such as Aramaic/Syriac or Ge'ez, would be welcome. We seek a scholar who can support the department's offerings in Bible, bridge the department's programs in Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Hebrew and Judaic Studies, and enhance collaborations with other programs on campus.
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations values interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and collegiality, and aims to promote a culturally diverse intellectual community. Candidates should apply online at: http://apply.interfolio.com/119530.
Please submit: a cover letter, CV, teaching statement, sample syllabi (one each for introductory-level Biblical Hebrew and Akkadian), and contact information for a minimum of three individuals who have agreed to provide a recommendation letter. We also encourage applicants to upload additional documents if available, such as recent teaching evaluations. The review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
