Position Description and Responsibilities:
The Department of Entomology at Cornell University, dedicated to rigorous scholarship and education with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, invites applications to fill an endowed tenure-track professorship in the broadly defined area of insect physiology and toxicology at the Associate or Full Professor level. Different types of expertise will be considered including, but not limited to, the areas of neurobiology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, molecular and cellular biology, endocrinology, nutrition, metabolism, reproduction, development, toxicology, immunology and/or pathogenesis, in insects or closely related arthropods. The successful candidate will be physically located at Cornell University in the Department of Entomology, Ithaca, NY. This full-time position involves 60% research and 40% teaching responsibilities on a 9-month academic year basis.
The Department seeks a collaborative individual who will complement expertise in the Department of Entomology as well as across the Cornell campus and community, and the successful applicant will work broadly with other scientists at Cornell. Strongest consideration will be given to scholars with demonstrated leadership in an internationally recognized research program, and a track record showing sustained commitment to teaching. The successful applicant will contribute to the Entomology undergraduate course curriculum, and will contribute a stage-appropriate level of service to the department, college, university, and field. Research (60%) – Outstanding research scholarship is expected, as the successful applicant will lead an internationally recognized research program in insect physiology and toxicology. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain a well-funded research program through agencies such as NIH, NSF, and/or USDA grants and may seek support from other federal agencies, public and private foundations, and/or the private sector. The candidate will develop the field of insect physiology and toxicology at Cornell through community building and collaborations with researchers involved in multiple aspects of insect physiology and toxicology. Excellence in and commitment to training graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and providing research opportunities for undergraduate students, is also expected.
Teaching (40%) – The successful candidate will be responsible for co-teaching Insect Physiology [ENTOM 4830, lecture and lab] and/or related courses. Insect Physiology is taught every other year and is an integral part of the department’s core curriculum. In addition, the successful candidate may develop a course in their area of expertise to be offered on alternate years and could have the option to contribute to major service courses such as Insect Biology [ENTOM 2120] or Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology [BIOG 1440].
Mentoring – We anticipate that the successful candidate will mentor graduate students, postdocs, undergraduates, and staff in their lab. The candidate will be responsible for establishing an inclusive, equitable, and productive working environment, and respectful mentor-mentee relationships.
Service – There is an expectation for the candidate to be engaged in professional societies as well as activities and leadership roles in the Department of Entomology, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Cornell more broadly.
A Ph.D. in molecular biology, entomology, or a related discipline with a background appropriate to the development of the research, teaching, and mentoring programs described above is required. A commitment to insect physiology and toxicology and to the development of a multidisciplinary team-based research program is essential.
