Position Description

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Harvard University seeks a full-time academic coach. The Academic Resource Center is the primary provider of academic support to students in Harvard College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The ARC's mission is to empower students to reach their full academic potential through skills-based resources, academic coaching, accountability groups, peer tutoring, and workshops. Using methods grounded in the behavioral and learning sciences, the ARC supports students in developing metacognitive approaches to their learning. ARC staff work in collaboration with staff and faculty in academic departments and co-curricular offices to support students' classroom experiences and their full access to the education that is part of the missions of Harvard College and the GSAS.

This academic coach will be responsible for developing academic support programming for undergraduate and graduate students. The ARC seeks a coach particularly invested in developing programming for students who are the first members of their communities to attend college or graduate school and students who are matriculating at non-traditional ages. This academic coach will work directly with these students as well as develop programming for them, as long-term national data indicate that these students may benefit from additional, intentional support. This role will also provide leadership on best practices in academic support for first generation, low income, and non-traditional students and will advise the Director of the ARC and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education on initiatives related to academic equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The academic coach will:
  • Design and facilitate workshops and discussions on topics such as: core academic skills like strategic reading, effective study strategies, and exam preparation; executive function skills like time management, attention, organization, personal accountability, and motivation; how to overcome common academic challenges like perfectionism and procrastination;
    other general skills related to college and graduate school learning.

  • Facilitate workshops, accountability groups, and other programs as requested by academic departments, co-curricular offices, and partner College and GSAS offices.

  • Meet one-on-one with students whose individual academic challenges can be better addressed outside of a group instructional setting.

  • Assist students in developing academic plans and setting academic goals.

  • Develop and maintain online tools and programs to support students in the areas above.

  • Participate fully in the academic community: Work closely with departmental faculty and academic staff to create workshops and training for specific departments and disciplines; liaise with Academic Departments, Dean of Students Office, First-Year Experience Office, Office of International Education, Accessible Education Office, and GSAS Office of Student Affairs to target academic support offerings to at-need students.

  • Maintain records, provide reports, and perform other activities and duties as assigned.
