Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 3+ years of experience providing academic support to university students in one or more areas related to college learning, such as peer tutoring programs, teaching, reading and study skills, executive function skills, advising, or academic coaching.
  • Degree, credential, or equivalent experience/competency in a quantitative field.
Additional Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated interest and experience working with student and colleague populations that are highly diverse in terms of, for example, race, language of origin, ethnicity, nationality, religion, first-generation to college, age, socio-economic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic abilities and interests.
  • Knowledge of best practices in quantitative literacy and education. Understanding of high school STEM curricula and transitions to college learning. Ability to provide group and 1:1 support to students, coach peer tutors, and advise faculty and course staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent materials development and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the field of academic support and academic coaching within the context of a liberal arts curricula a plus.
  • Experience teaching, advising, or mentoring students in a quantitative field in higher education a plus.
  • Knowledge of or experience with development and use of online tools for academic support a plus.
Additional Information

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Harvard University is the primary provider of academic support to students in Harvard College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The ARC’s mission is to empower students to reach their full academic potential through skills-based resources, academic coaching, accountability groups, peer tutoring, and workshops. Using methods grounded in the behavioral and learning sciences, the ARC supports students in developing metacognitive approaches to their learning. The ARC works in collaboration with staff and faculty in academic departments and co-curricular offices to support students’ classroom experiences and their full access to the education that is part of the missions of Harvard College and the GSAS.

Working Conditions

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA and requires at least 3 days in the office. Furthermore, individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business. May be required to work nights and weekends.

Position Description

The Assistant Director for STEM Support will be the primary liaison with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and STEM departments and courses within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including courses in the quantitative social sciences. The ARC seeks an individual who is invested in developing programming for students who are underrepresented in STEM fields and students who are the first members of their communities to attend college or graduate school. Together with the ARC peer tutoring team, the Assistant Director for STEM Support will provide leadership on best practices in supporting students in quantitative courses and will advise the Director of the ARC and Associate Dean of Academic Engagement on initiatives related to quantitative literacy and academic equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM fields.

The Assistant Director for STEM Support will:
  • Independently perform a range of tasks related to STEM academic support, including:
    • identify the needs of students studying in STEM fields, taking quantitative, data, and/or problem-set based courses, and/or doing research in STEM;
    • develop strong relationships with faculty and staff in STEM departments;
    • assess current levels of support and resources provided through courses and departments.
  • Work closely with the peer tutoring program to design and facilitate workshops and group support targeting the identified gaps between students’ needs and current levels and types of support.
  • Develop and analyze reports and statistics; provide reports to management to assist with setting the strategic direction of STEM academic support.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and discussions focused on supporting students in STEM and SEAS courses, concentrations, and programs. Topics might include:
    • how to approach core academic skills in quantitative courses (e.g., reading, effective study strategies, and exam preparation);
    • executive function skills like time management, attention, organization, personal accountability, and motivation;
    • other general skills related to college and graduate student learning.
  • Facilitate group sessions, accountability groups, and other programs as requested by academic departments, co-curricular offices, and partner College and GSAS offices.
  • Provide academic coaching to students whose individual academic challenges in quantitative courses and fields can be better addressed in a 1-1 setting.
  • Develop and maintain online tools and programs to support students in the areas above.
  • Participate fully in the academic community: Work closely with faculty and academic staff in STEM departments to create workshops and training for specific disciplines; liaise with Dean of Students Office, First-Year Experience Office, Disability Access Office, and GSAS Office of Academic Programs and Office of Student Affairs to target academic support offerings to students.
  • Participate in regular professional development.
  • Maintain records, provide reports, and perform other activities and duties as assigned.
