The College of Business

Officially founded on July 1, 2010, the UMW College of Business builds on Mary Washington's tradition of a well-rounded undergraduate program in the liberal arts, with small classes that encourage direct interaction with its expert faculty. As other schools of business are just discovering the value of a solid grounding in the liberal arts for tomorrow's leaders, UMW's undergraduate business program has been, and will remain, firmly rooted in its liberal arts foundation.

Today, the AACSB accredited College of Business (COB) has 18 full-time faculty members from diverse backgrounds and offers an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with majors in Accounting, Business Administration, Marketing, and International Business, as well as an MBA program. As a teaching-first institution that is grounded in the liberal arts and centrally located between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, the COB develops critical thinkers who are honorable leaders and work collaboratively to innovate, solve business problems, and address societal needs. The COB offers students opportunities for internships, executive mentorships, study abroad experiences, volunteer work, and research collaboration with faculty.

Since the 1920s, Business education has been an integral part of Mary Washington, evolving as the institution did from primarily preparing teachers to preparing future leaders in a wide variety of fields. In 1948, Mary Washington began offering an Economics and Business Administration major, separating them officially into two departments with separate majors in 1980. That same year, a Master's of Business Administration degree was added. In 1999, Business was one of two evening programs (the other was Education) opening at the new Stafford Campus, thus continuing the tradition of serving the educational needs of the community and the growing region.

About University of Mary Washington

The University of Mary Washington is one of Virginia's outstanding public liberal arts universities, providing a superior education that inspires and enables graduates to make positive changes in the world. Founded in 1908, Fredericksburg Teachers College was the new Normal and Industrial School for Women. In 1938, the institution was renamed Mary Washington College (MWC) to honor George Washington's mother.
From 1944 to 1972, MWC served as the women's college of the University of Virginia but was reorganized as an independent college after becoming co-ed in the early 1970s.

In 2004, its name changed again to its current University of Mary Washington, which recognizes the university's graduate and professional programs and its expansion to a three-campus system.

Today's UMW is one of the nation's premier selective public liberal arts and sciences universities with high-quality teaching and learning as its animating force. UMW community members--faculty, students, and staff--share in creating and exploring knowledge through freedom of inquiry, personal responsibility, and service. The University offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs within which students integrate and apply their knowledge to develop their professional interests and practice the habits of mind necessary for lifelong learning. Faculty members engage in research that enhances their classrooms, especially encouraging the participation of undergraduates in research.

UMW's size, dedicated faculty, and historical commitment to excellent teaching create an institutional culture where undergraduate and graduate students benefit from strong connections with their faculty and multiple opportunities for experiential learning. UMW graduates are models of adaptive learning, personal achievement, responsible leadership, service to others, and engaged citizenship in a diverse global society.

UMW's main campus is in Fredericksburg, an hour's drive from the nation's and state's capitals in Washington, D.C., and Richmond. The location provides students unique internships, research excursions, and recreational opportunities. UMW has two other nearby campuses. Ten miles north, the Stafford campus was built to address continuing and professional needs and hosts a local county school. Thirty miles west is UMW's Dahlgren campus. This area in King George County is the home of a U.S. naval base established in 1918. UMW offers continuing education and professional development courses for the region's engineers, scientists, and administrative professionals.

UMW serves nearly 4,000 students, a majority of which are undergraduates representing 33 states and 20 foreign countries. Nearly 30 percent come from underserved populations, and about 55 percent live on campus in one of 14 residence halls or apartments. UMW's students work closely with faculty members— the faculty-to-student ratio is 12:1, and the University has never employed graduate teaching assistants. Eighty-six percent of these master teachers hold a doctorate or other terminal degree in their field, and eight since 2006 have received Fulbright Awards to teach and research abroad.

The University offers more than 60 majors, minors, and four graduate degree programs with rich learning experiences that include first-year seminars, undergraduate research, internship, study abroad, leadership service, and recreational opportunities. First-year seminars introduce students to the pursuit of intellectual inquiry by exploring nontraditional topics in nontraditional ways. Courses like Creating Arts and Ideas, Inequality and the American Dream, Podcasting the First-Year Experience introduce students to the life of the mind of faculty members in classes capped at 15.

One-third of UMW students have an international experience, in one of 15 programs led by faculty or in ten exchange programs in 30 countries, before graduating. On campus, students participate in over 100 clubs and organizations centered on academics, arts, sports, student government, cultural diversity, and other interests.

The Mary Washington Eagles have 19 teams competing in Coast to Coast Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division III. UMW has been recognized as having the best overall athletic program a dozen times, and 334 Eagles have been named to All- American teams. The University also offers team sports in rugby and esports, 23 club sports, indoor and outdoor tennis facilities, a gymnasium, and a fitness center.

The University is affordable, especially for Virginia residents, with tuition and fees of approximately $13,500 for undergraduates, while non-residents pay just over $30,000. The University administers $44 million annually in financial assistance. Graduate school costs $625 per credit hour for in-state residents; $1,165 per credit hour for out-of- state residents.

The University of Mary Washington is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate and master's degrees. Program accreditations include the College of Business by AACSB International; the College of Education by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP); the Chemistry program by the American Chemical Society; and the Nursing program by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing (CCNE).
