Temporary Instructors in Academic and Student Development (unsolicited)

Job Summary/Basic Function

Temporary part-time or full-time Instructors are occasionally needed in the Academic and Student Development department of Millersville University. These instructors focus on providing success strategies, advisement and support to students in transition, especially as that relates to first-year and transfer students.

Specific duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:
1. Be a highly visible and effective advocate for first-year and transfer students to assure that students are thriving throughout their transition to the University.
2. Reach out to first-year and transfer students and identify those who are experiencing transition difficulties. Customize success strategies based on student needs.
3. Maintain a caseload of students who will benefit most from one-to-one attention.
4. Provide group support for students where appropriate.
5. Serve as an advising resource and support to faculty in academic majors who provide major-related advice to students.
6. Work directly with other offices on campus to ensure an effective delivery of services to support student success. Offices and departments include, but are not limited to:
- Millersville Scholars Program
- Learning Services
- Writing Center
- Student Programs
- Housing and Resident Life
- Financial Aid
- Registrar’s Office
- Bursar’s Office
- Academic Departments
- Deans and Associate Deans

7. Perform all other duties as assigned.

In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.

Required Qualifications

Earned Master’s degree in Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, or related field with relevant advising experience;

Minimum of at least two years of academic advising experience in higher education setting;

Knowledge and experience in advising transfer, under-represented and non-traditional adult students;

Experience in the use of innovative advising techniques and technologies;

Excellent written and oral communications, interpersonal, and organization skills;

Ability to work collaboratively with department faculty and staff members as well as university constituencies;

Proficiency with electronic technologies and software programs such as word-processing, spread sheets, presentation software, e-mails, and web searches;

Successful interview, teaching demonstration and three background checks: Act 34 Criminal Record Check; Act 151 Child Abuse History; Act 114 FBI Federal Criminal History-Fingerprinting.

Preferred Qualifications

ABD or earned doctorate;

Experience with academic early alert programs;

Evidence of conducting advising related and retention research.
