Job Description:

The Department of Neurology at the UF Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases welcomes upcoming Genetic Counseling graduates and experienced Genetic Counselors to apply to our new Genetic Counselor position. You will provide both clinical and research genetic counseling in adult neurodegenerative diseases. The UF Health Neuromedicine - Fixel Institute clinic is a rapidly expanding clinic providing care for Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and neuromuscular disorders, dementias, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and multiple sclerosis (MS)/neuroimmunology. The institute provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care to patients under one roof including neurologists, neurosurgery, psychiatry, neuropsychology, rehab (PT/OT, speech), dieticians, and social work, as well as multiple research opportunities (both clinical and basic/translational).You will join our current team of a genetic counselor and a genetic counselor assistant (GCA) to provide counseling for multiple neurological disorders and to assist with neurogenetic research studies. The position offers a unique opportunity for you to join an exciting, collaborative team of clinicians and scientists, and to help physicians, patients and their families better understand the growing field of neurogenetics.

Responsibilities to include:

Clinical genetic counseling for patients and families at the UF Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases. Work as part of a team with the supervising clinician/neurologist and perform assessments of patients, their disease, family/genetic history, and counsel patients (and family/caregivers) about genetic testing, potential results, and implications for their disease and associated family members. Help determine appropriate ordering and genetic tests, work with payers on reimbursement, report and interpret results where appropriate, and maximize their clinical utility to improve patient care.

Assist with clinicogenetic research programs and Centers of Excellence associated with the Fixel Institute. Duties include working with patients and family members to enable biospecimen collection for genetic studies. Provide research genetic counseling, input on genetic results and potential implications for patients and family members. Help support grant and IRB protocol applications involving clinicogenetics.

Assist with the design, organization and maintenance of a clinical-research databank for neurogenetics. Develop standardized genetic counseling protocols.

Provide basic training on genetic testing and counseling protocols to students, fellows, and faculty. Present on neurogenetics and counseling at patient/caregiver support groups or other center events upon request.

Expected Salary:

$65,000 - $80,000; commensurate with education and experience.

This position is eligible for great benefits, including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans and paid time off.

Minimum Requirements:

A master's degree from a genetic counseling training program or its equivalent as determined by the Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling or its successor or an equivalent entity; or A doctoral degree from a medical genetics training program accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics or the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists.

Licensed as a Genetic Counselor in accordance with Chapter 483, Florida Statutes

Upcoming graduates are welcome to apply! Degree must be conferred ahead of start date and in time for State of Florida licensure. Candidates not already licensed by the State of Florida as a Genetic Counselor must be able to become licensed by the State of Florida prior to start date. Individuals not licensed by the State of Florida cannot perform the work of a Genetic Counselor until such time that they have become licensed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good communication and clinical skills, along with willingness to work in a flexible, collaborative clinic environment.

EMR use (Epic)
Knowledge in data processing and preparation for analysis
Practical knowledge in computer operating systems (Windows, Macintosh OS), and software (MS Word, Power Point, Excel)
