Dean of the College of Engineering

The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) seeks applications and nominations for a visionary and strategic leader as Dean of the College of Engineering with a proven commitment to academic excellence and shared decision-making. Expected start will be Summer 2023.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost) and serving as the College’s Chief Academic Officer, the Dean will play a central role in enhancing academic excellence and aligning priorities with the strategic plans for Academic Affairs and the University. The Dean serves as a member of the Provost’s senior leadership team and will work closely with the Provost, other university leaders, faculty, and staff in formulating the College’s academic goals and policies. The Dean is a role model of integrity and professionalism for the College’s facility and is assessable to undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the Dean is responsible for the articulation of the College’s vision of academic distinction; the development and administration of academic programs; scholarship, research, and service initiatives among faculty; college policies relating to instruction, curriculum, and research; and faculty and academic staff appointments and performance assessments.

The Dean supervises activities within the College’s program areas (Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering), as well as several research centers and other units that support the academic mission of the College.

Working collaboratively with the campus community, the Dean supports excellence in teaching, research, creativity, and service while fostering activities that improve the retention, achievement, and timely graduation of students. Additionally, the Dean works with industry and community leaders to develop research and educational partnerships that contribute to the economic vitality of the region.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. in Engineering, a related applied science, or equivalent field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Demonstrated record of progressive academic and administrative accomplishments, including credentials that qualify for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor
  • Success in attracting, recruiting, retaining, and evaluating faculty consistent with the highest standards of scholarship
  • Experience in building successful, productive administration-faculty relationships and shared decision-making
  • Success in leading programs to ABET accreditation
  • Experience in developing/restructuring interdisciplinary research and academic programs
  • Demonstrated success in developing productive partnerships with community/industry
  • Success building and executing a strategic and fiscally-sound academic budget
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Dean in a small to medium size College of Engineering
  • Varied and extensive success securing extramural funding from state and federal agencies
  • Success in promoting an academic unit to community partners, leading to significant financial support
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multi-function units to enhance student recruitment

The College of Engineering was formed five years ago from a department within the College of Business and Engineering. It has long-established accredited degree programs in Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering and has initiated three new degree programs in recent years: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. The College is also home to the Texas Water and Energy Institute and will open a new Advanced Manufacturing Center in Spring 2023. The College is housed in a building that opened in 2019, with excellent facilities for instructional and curricular activities and research and development. A second building is undergoing a complete renovation and will house a state-of-the-art Innovation and Commercialization Center.

UTPB offers 36 baccalaureate degree programs and 20 master’s degree programs in the arts and sciences, business, engineering, education, and health and human performance—and the University continues to grow. Recently added chemical and electrical engineering programs offer unique internship opportunities that are attracting new students.

UT Permian Basin offers residential, commuter, and on-line educational opportunities. Designated a Hispanic Serving Institution, almost half of UTPB’s student population identifies as Hispanic. UTPB is also designated as a Minority Serving Institution. About half of the students at UTPB are first-generation college students. Athletics are an important tradition at UTPB. UTPB participates in NCAA Division-II sports and fields 16 teams.

UTPB is located in the The Permian Basin, one of the fastest-growing, culturally vibrant, economically invigorated regions of the country - full of industry, culture, and wide-open spaces. The Permian Basin is home to the world’s largest petroleum field, accounting for 30% of the US domestic oil production. Wind and solar developments are diversifying the Permian Basin, putting it on the map as a critical energy provider for the future. As the only major university in the Permian Basin, UTPB is positioned to be its academic center, providing leadership and skilled professionals across all of the region’s prominent and growing industries.

The area is known for its laid-back, inviting communities that people around the country have come to associate with Texas towns. Midland and Odessa form a thriving metropolis (home to 300,000) with plenty to do and see in the growing region – from a great variety of restaurants, museums, and theatres, to hiking, hunting, and enjoying the area’s natural wonders. Midland International Airport provides convenient air travel as well.

The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate for the promotion of excellence; an academic leader with a track record of effective academic and administrative experiences; and a visionary and strategic thinker who can demonstrate collaboration and administrative accomplishment.
