Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Operations, a registered nurse and according to established protocol or direction of a physician or nurse practitioner, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) performs a variety of skilled and nursing duties and gives direct nursing care to students in the Student Health Center and performs related work as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for administering medications/immunizations and performing other skilled nursing duties which require specialized training, judgment, and skill.
- Performs routine patient care and assists physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses.
- Performs basic intake assessments in person or on phone for non-acute, acute, or urgent problems and expedites treatment as necessary with direction from the physician, nurse practitioner or registered nurse.
- May spend a portion of time performing duties such as those performed by a Medical Assistant.
Oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers, staff, and departmental staff. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Ability to consistently be present at job/work. Comply with SHS policies, procedures, and guidelines. Comply with HIPAA Health Care Privacy and Security Law EMR access level is based on work functions. Practice within LVN scope of practice as guided by Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians. Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices and of basic medications and their effects. Ability to quickly learn related clinic procedures and to handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center. Make accurate observations and exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility. Follow detailed oral and written instructions; understand basic medical terminology and regularly exercise good nursing practices. Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a high school diploma and successful completion of a state approved vocational nursing program in an accredited school of vocational nursing or equivalent training and experience as defined by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) required. One year of nursing experience preferred. Possess and maintain a valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California. Possess and maintain valid CPR/AED certification and/or IV certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.

Compensation
The hiring range for this position is $3,120 to $5,610 per month based on experience. The CSU salary range for this classification is $3,120 to $5,610 per month.

Time Base
