The Painting Program of the School of Art at the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts is now accepting applications for a nine-month Scholar in Residence at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (CWMCA) for the 2023-2024 academic year. The successful candidate will teach a 1/1 course load, vigorously pursue their creative/scholarly research, and be an active participant in both CWMCA and the Painting Program.

The Scholar in Residence is designed for a post-graduate candidate of the highest caliber in their respective field. Scholars will engage in interdisciplinary methods of inquiry and dialogue, as well as consult/collaborate with faculty, students and schools across the UH campus. Candidates will collaborate with programs within the Mitchell Center and the Painting Program, as well as regularly meet with the other CWMCA Scholars. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, or interdisciplinary arts.

Applicants should work in two or more artistic disciplines or have clear interdisciplinary research interests they wish to pursue. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

The Scholar in Residence in Painting is open to artists, curators, critics, and art historians with demonstrated research centered in contemporary painting, drawing, and printmaking, and an interest in intersectional studies that may include, for instance, critical analysis, philosophy, or pedagogy. This position is a nine-month appointment.

The Scholar in Residence in Painting will:
  • Meet regularly with the other CWMCA Scholars and the Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts to address the connection of their activities to the goals/vision of CWMCA, to plan activities with this group that highlight collaboration, and to conduct research in their field.
  • Create and execute a community engagement event through CWMCA and coordinate documentation of the project for CWMCA archives. The community engagement event can be related to any of the programs in the schedule of the Center such as Visiting Artists, Artists in Residence or Lecture series.
  • Teach one course per semester (1/1) in either painting, drawing, printmaking or IARTS (Interdisciplinary Arts), to be decided in discussion with the Painting Program Coordinator & IARTS.
  • Be provided with a 250 sq. foot studio in the School of Art, with 24/7 access.
  • Mount an exhibition at a Houston venue during their residency.
  • Attend CWMCA & School of Art events.
  • Serve as community ambassador for the Mitchell Center and the Painting Program.
Please submit with your application:
  • A one-page statement of purpose, which includes how interdisciplinary practice/research informs work and/or what you hope to purse or expand through interdisciplinary methods and inquiry.
  • A narrative that describes your teaching and presents your teaching evaluations (quantitative summary, relevant student comments) and/or a letter from a professor who has observed your class.
  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A sample of your creative/scholarly research (digital portfolio of 10-20 images).
  • Contact information for three professional references.
Application Deadline: February 1, 2023
