The Department of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle is recruiting a new Medical Director of the UW Medicine Transplant Institute. The Medical Director will collaborate with the Surgical Director to oversee clinical operations and to help determine strategic planning of the Transplant Institute. The Transplant Institute’s Medical Director is expected to further enhance the University of Washington’s nationally renowned solid organ transplant programs.  We anticipate that the successful applicant would start in July 1, 2023.

The Transplant Institute includes the UW’s premier solid organ deceased and living donor transplant programs in liver, kidney, and pancreas.  Our programs are nationally recognized in both volume and outcomes. The newly developed UW Medicine Transplant Institute is a major strategic investment to grow and further develop our transplant infrastructure.

The Medical Director of the UW Medicine Transplant Institute will be responsible for working directly and in partnership with the Surgical Director to oversee and manage the operations and clinical directors of the respective transplant programs and working with the Chairs of Medicine and Surgery and hospital administration to ensure the financial integrity, growth and sustainability of the transplant care line. The Medical Director of the Transplant Institute should demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  The Medical Director will be expected to be clinically active in the solid organ transplant programs and to teach fellows, medicine residents, medical students, and other providers.

The Department of Medicine includes over 1,500 faculty physicians, trainees, and advanced practice providers and more than 500 staff members.  The Department of Medicine encompasses clinical work, research, and education at five medical centers, including the Montlake, Eastside, and Northwest campuses of the University of Washington Medical Center (a quaternary referral center for the five-state WWAMI region), Harborview Medical Center (a safety net hospital and the only major (Level I) trauma center in a 5-state area), the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and the Seattle and Boise VA Medical Centers.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time faculty member at the rank of  Associate or full Professor, without tenure due to funding (WOT), in the Division of Gastroenterology or Division of Nephrology. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank.  Associate and Full Professors (WOT) hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The base salary range for this position will be: $20,900 - $28,334 per month ($250,800 - $340,008 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. Other compensation associated with this position may include Monthly Additional Compensation (MAC), Temporary Pay Supplement (TPS) and/or an Administrative Supplement  (ADS) in addition to base pay.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The Medical Director role has the opportunity for additional funding to support research, administrative, and teaching. For practitioners holding an appointment in one of the physicians practice plans, see the link for additional benefits that may be available at  https://faculty.uwmedicine.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/UWP-Benefits-Summary-for-recruitingef-edits-v3.pdf

It is expected the right applicant have a national reputation demonstrated through memberships and awards and have prior expertise in leadership of transplant programs with a focus on financial stewardship. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of scholarly and pedagogical achievements.

Candidates should have an MD (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in either Gastroenterology or Nephrology (or foreign equivalent). In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent, as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Please submit a letter of interest, CV, list of 3 references, and a diversity statement of past and planned contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (not to exceed 2 pages) addressed to the search committee chair: Bradley Anawalt, MD at Banawalt@medicine.washington.edu.
