Assistant Professor of Theatre – Costume Design

The Theatre Department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Assistant Professor of Costume Design for Theatre, to begin in August 2023.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Assistant Professor of Costume Design for Theatre will teach undergraduate theatre courses, which may include costume design, stage makeup, introduction to theatre design, and costume history. Other responsibilities include designing costumes, make-up, and hair for the department’s regular production season, mentor costume and make-up students in production experiences, academic advising, curriculum development, and recruitment.

In addition, the Assistant Professor of Costume Design for Theatre will be expected to display and maintain a demonstrated excellence in teaching and artistic endeavor/scholarship potential, a commitment to a liberal arts undergraduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

All tenure track faculty are expected to participate in service activities on the department, school, and university level appropriate to rank with the goal of providing leadership.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA in Costume Design or related field at time of
  • Successful candidates will have promise of or excellence in artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical practice, have prior experience as a costume designer in a professional or an academic setting, and have a commitment to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, identities and levels of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in costume construction and technology; including but not limited to: machine and hand sewing, pattern making, and draping
  • Evidence of successful design collaborations showcasing various body types, skin tones, hair textures, and gender expression.
  • Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SUNY Oswego’s goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines
  • Evidence of effective communication, particularly in regard to their design vision
  • Evidence of a commitment to collegial collaboration
  • Evidence of creative solutions and working with small budgets
  • Ideal candidates will possess physical rendering skills as well as current digital design techniques. Advanced knowledge in multiple applications and current software environments is a plus.
  • Evidence of successful designs in multiple styles of performance such as dance, children’s theatre, musicals, and period drama
  • Experience with soft goods, upholstery, or stage properties
  • Active participation in industry organizations such as, but not limited to: USITT, USA, ATHE, or SETC

Description of Department:

The costume shop functions with one pin-able table and one large layout table, 8 Necchi and 4 Bernina sewing machines, two home sergers, two industrial Juki sergers, and two ironing tables each with gravity fed industrial irons. A large craft room houses a washer, dryer, dye vat, and workspace. Costumes are stored throughout the theatre building, with limited storage in the costume shop. The 400+ proscenium space offers a large dressing room with fourteen lit stations of hair/makeup application. The small black-box space has two small dressing rooms each with lit stations for hair/makeup application.

The SUNY Oswego Theatre Department has approximately 60 majors in its Liberal Arts Bachelor of Arts degree program along with the available minors in Dance, Expressive Arts Therapy, Live Event Design, and Theatre. We are a NAST accredited program with strong regional and national presence through the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and United States Institute of Theatrical Technology.
