Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, an undergraduate college of The New School, invites applications for a four-year, full-time, Renewable Term Appointment in Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning in the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Renewable Term Appointment (RTA) is a university-wide faculty appointment type. The first contract is generally for four years; contracts may be renewed indefinitely, depending on the university's need and successful review at the end of each contract. RTA faculty are considered principal faculty and are eligible for research support. They may also be considered for promotion in rank. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2022; the position will remain open until filled.

The Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department offers a BA degree in Interdisciplinary Science. Courses apply a planetary health framework that connects scientific and quantitative principles and practices to issues of health, environment and equity. The department also coordinates the Quantitative Reasoning program that serves more than 500 students every academic year, spanning over two Quantitative Reasoning courses that help students develop their fundamental numerical and quantitative skills and prepare future industry leaders and managers to function professionally and make informed decisions in this data-driven world. The department includes five full-time faculty members, 6-7 part time faculty members who are practitioners in their respective fields, 5-6 Graduate Teaching Fellows, and a shared departmental secretary.

The successful candidate will have clear ideas for cultivating a positive learning environment with diverse groups of students and will be aware of the unique assets and challenges of an urban teaching and learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to, diversity in race/ethnicity, LGBTQ status, gender identity, socioeconomic status, familial education background, residency status (e.g., international, domestic, local), and career trajectories. They will also be able to adapt course material for students in a variety of academic programs (e.g., liberal arts, design) and majors. In particular, a core student constituency for Quantitative Reasoning is students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design at The New School. It is expected that, although candidates may have a quantitative background, they are able to engage with visual learners who possess a strong interest in business strategy and creative industries. The successful candidate will also show evidence of their dedication to inclusive learning environments and the ability to teach inter- and multidisciplinary QR principles through social justice contexts. They will demonstrate an ability to use a range of creative, student-centered instructional strategies, including technological tools, and reflect on their effectiveness to better foster student learning.
