Job Description

The Assistant Provost for Arts and Community Programming provides programmatic and operational leadership for arts, humanities and community focused academic initiatives at the university and within the local Syracuse community.

The Assistant Provost provides direct leadership for the Coalition of Museums and Art Centers ( CMAC ) and for South Side and Community Initiatives. The Assistant Provost provides direct supervision for Light Work Photography Gallery, La Casita Cultural Center, Office of Cultural Engagement, Point of Contact, and the Shaw Center for Community Engagement. The Assistant Provost develops and implements ongoing programming to support faculty and student engagement with arts, humanities, and local community relations.

The Assistant Provost for Arts and Community Programming reports to the Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives in Academic Affairs. There is also an expectation of deep involvement and collaboration with the Deans, Associate/Assistant Deans, the Office of Community Engagement, Academic Leaders for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility, and various community partners and stakeholders.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have higher education experience, leadership skills, and vision to lead and assess complex organizational change. The qualified candidate will have experience working within and across diverse communities with an emphasis on arts, humanities, and community engagement. The qualified candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of community engagement and inclusive leadership, management and supervisory experience, and direct experience in developing and implementing new programs and processes. Terminal degree and experience in higher education preferred.

  • High level of proficiency in strategic planning & development, project implementation & management, & use of data/evidence to assess performance and inform ongoing improvement
  • Ability to network, collaborate, & develop effective working relationships w/all constituencies of the University and with other community stakeholders to accomplish goals
  • Proven record of successful accomplishments working w/culturally diverse populations, & bringing together individuals and groups to work collaboratively toward meeting well-articulated goals
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records, student information, & employee personnel records and data
  • Proven record of team building & motivating individuals w/creativity & energy
Responsibilities

As Director of CMAC, will provide strategic and operational direction for central administration of arts and humanities programming, to include direct oversight for the Coalition of Museums and Art Centers ( CMAC ), Light Work Photography Gallery, La Casita Cultural Center, Point of Contact, and Office of Cultural Engagement. Will support implementation of the CMAC strategic plan and elevation of its vision and mission. Will work with CMAC organizations to build visibility within the SU community, CNY region, and anticipated international network. Will facilitate collaborative programming and opportunities for shared resources and operational functions, to include communications support and co-sponsorships. Represent the Provost and Associate Provost as requested.

As Director of South Side and Community Initiatives, will provide strategic and operational leadership for South Side and other local community academic related initiatives. Will develop programming for South Side initiatives through an Engaged Communities Faculty Fellows program. Will serve as the primary liaison to the South Side Community Organizations.

Will provide oversight for the Shaw Center for Community Engagement, to include the Phanstiels Scholars Program. Will work as the primary liaison to the Office of Community Engagement and provide central coordination for academic focused community relations, research projects, and student academic engagements. Will work and collaborate across academic units, with deans/associate deans, department chairs, and faculty to inventory and assess community engaged scholarship and teaching.

Will provide administrative and operational leadership and support for faculty development opportunities that emphasize community engagement and integration of the arts and humanities, to include support of the SU Art Museum Faculty Fellows program and the Engaged Communities Faculty Fellows program. Will work closely with Office of Faculty Affairs to collaborate on faculty development opportunities.

Will oversee the Provost’s artist in residence program. Will provide direct supervision, programming support, and performance evaluation for the artist in residence.
