Overview
The Department of Mathematics and the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics (PACM) are hiring a shared Departmental Computing Support position. This individual will need expertise in Mac, Windows, and some experience working with Linux (Red Hat). The position will provide technical support to end users within a client/server operation in Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms, printer support, configuring and installing networked hardware and software, and debugging. The Math Department and PACM are fast-paced environments, requiring the ability to prioritize. The position will be 50% Math and 50% Program in Applied & Computational Mathematics (PACM) and will report to the Math/PACM Systems Manager.
Responsibilities
-
Support of desktops and laptops
for Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems; troubleshooting and
configuration of laptops and managed machines, utilizing PXE, Jamf,
INtune, and other installation/management methods.
Provide guidance to faculty and
staff on their computing purchases; install and configure all new
computer systems (Mac, Windows, and Linux), software, printers,
scanners, laptops, and other computing-related devices.
Ensure systems are kept in
required configuration profile, including: back-up, patch
maintenance, changes as required by evolution of production
environments, updating software and hardware configurations.
Promote user security, maintain
system computer security, backup and restoration of user data.
Support user-configuration
profiles, including back-up, patch maintenance, updates, security,
and data restoration.
Provide A/V support for
department/program events.
Create and administer user
accounts and authentication server data.
Document department/program
processes and create checklists to ensure actions are performed in
an efficient and consistent manner.
Working with Systems and
Network Administrator, maintain inventory of equipment and
consumables (printer toner) and order new equipment and supplies as
necessary.
Attendance at monthly SCAD/DCS
meetings and technical training sessions to keep abreast with
technology changes at the University is required.
Manage a technical-support
ticket system while being on-call for urgent system issues and
support requests.
Advise and train faculty and
staff in evolving technologies.
- Coordinate IT purchases including requisition, budget, and end-user setup and training.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent related work experience. Experience administering Windows, Mac, and Linux workstations. Ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience. Exemplary customer service, attitude and strong initiative. Excellent organization, interpersonal, and communication skills. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

Experience in an academic
environment.
Administration and web
experience using open source technologies.
Shell and python scripting to
automate aspects of systems maintenance.
Experience with configuration
management.
Experience with Linux/Unix
applications.
Ability to consult with and
train Linux users in application and operating system
fundamentals.
Familiarity with scientific
computing software, such as Matlab, Mathematica, LaTeX, and other
research tools.
- Knowledge of content management systems and web design, such as Drupal CMS.
