Overview

The Business Intelligence Analyst plays a key role in the design, implementation and maintenance of Business Intelligence solutions of financial data maintained by the University. Reporting to the Manager, Business Intelligence, the Analyst designs architecture, data model and field mappings to load transactional data from ERP and other financial systems into the data warehouse to provide reporting and analytic capabilities. Working with other team members of the Business Intelligence team, the Analyst also works on the development of managed reports, analytics and data visualizations.

Responsibilities

Design Data Warehouse, Reporting and Analytic Capabilities:

  • Collaborate with PeopleSoft functional analysts and business stakeholders to gather, document, analyze and map business requirements to design concept/logical data models and multi-dimensional database structures (e.g. facts, dimensions, attributes) to support standard reporting, dashboard and self-service environment.
  • Ensure user requirements are captured accurately and define report scope and objectives.
  • Design and maintain ETL specifications and data mapping documents. Work closely with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) on the implementation of new data marts and/or updating data within the data warehouse.
  • Monitor, investigate and reconcile data integrity and data quality between enterprise financial systems and data warehouse.
  • Document best practices and methodologies for development standards, version control, deployment checklists and change management.

Develop Reports, Visualizations and Self-Service Analytics:

  • Design and build standard BI reports, data visualizations that are intuitive, informative, and impactful and deliver insights for users at all levels.
  • Develop self-service reporting and analytical capabilities enabling data exploration and insights.
  • Design and develop meta data models to support the existing sematic layer using Cognos Framework Manager or Data Modules.
  • Contributes to the planning, development and execution of report/dashboard testing tasks.

Perform Ongoing Maintenance on Data Warehouse Reports and Analytics:

  • Identify, investigate, resolve and document BI report defects and other production issues.
  • Performance optimization and tuning on new and/or existing data warehouse implementations.
  • Provide user support and training on self-service reporting and analytical capabilities.
  • Contribute to day-to-day production support activities and their resolution.

Other Activities:

  • Execute other projects, assignments and tasks as required.
  • Availability needed during off-hours and weekends for go-lives, year-end closing and production system emergencies.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in data modeling and data warehouse design and implementation
  • 5+ years of hand-on experience with BI reporting and data visualization tools (IBM Cognos Analytics and Tableau or Microsoft Power BI).
  • 4+ years of semantic layer development using Cognos Framework Manager, Cognos Data Modules or Tableau Prep
  • Excellent knowledge of SQL for data analysis, issue detection
  • Solid experience in SQL query performance analysis and tuning techniques
  • Familiarity with ETL tools (DataStage or Informatica)
  • Experience with dimensional modelling, star schema architectures is required
  • Familiarity with Oracle Cloud ERP, Workday or similar enterprise business systems
  • Ability to trace solution design, documentation and test cases
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and strong track record of setting and meeting project deliverables in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple projects
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, analytical and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience delivering solutions on cloud data warehouse platforms like Microsoft Azure Synapse or Snowflake
  • Proven experience with data warehouse implementations in a higher-education setting
  • Master’s degree in technology, accounting or related field
  • Project management experience
