Executive Director, Institute of International Economic Law - Georgetown University Law Center

The Institute of International Economic Law (IIEL) is the focal point for the study of international economic law at Georgetown University and is one of the leading centers for international economic law and policy in the world. Our faculty includes scholars and practitioners at the forefront of all areas of international economic law including international trade, tax, fintech and monetary affairs. Engaged with students, legal practitioners, the DC and global policy communities, IIEL administers a robust calendar of executive education and academic programs on campus and around the world.

Job Overview

The Executive Director is a senior professional with extensive prior experience within the field of international economic law and policy responsible for the Institute's strategic long term and short-term planning. They are primarily charged with supporting the mission of the Institute by managing and executing large work streams, projects and events for the organization. They organize IIEL conferences, colloquia and special events, manage external relations; assist in advancement efforts and student-centered fellowship and certificate programs; and represent IIEL at conferences and meetings and assist in the execution of the IIEL's colloquium.

The Executive Director reports to the Faculty Director, but has the capability, responsibility and authority to manage and coordinate all aspects of the Institute's work; and acts for the Faculty Director when necessary and coordinate closely with internal staff to bring IIEL programs to targeted external audiences and building communities around our areas of focus to move from ideas to implementation.

They also coordinate with university staff involving Centers & Institutes, global/transnational and advancement activities to plan, promote and execute significant and substantive IIEL programs on campus and abroad.

The IIEL Faculty Director and Executive Director constitute the Institute's senior leadership team, strategizing together to engineer continued IIEL advancement.

Work Interactions

The Executive Director is responsible for cooperating with senior Law School and University management, high-level government officials, business leaders, and academic and civil society organizations worldwide as necessary to advance IIEL's position as a thought leader amongst Washington, DC's think tanks and multilateral institutions, and as a convening force in the international economic law arena.

They fulfill a critical operational and managerial need, necessary to facilitate the smooth functioning of all IIEL programs and activities. The IIEL Executive Director has primary day-to-day responsibility for all aspects of Institute operations and activities related to administration of IIEL events, programs, policies and procedures; manages the Associate Director and Program Associate; oversees the department's financial and budgetary transactions, fundraising, office management, event and communications initiatives.

The Executive Director is responsible for executing the Institute's world class programming in international trade, international tax, fintech and monetary affairs; advancing IIEL's position as a prominent thought leader amongst Washington, DC's think tanks and multilateral institutions, and as a convening force in the international economic law arena; and spearheading advancement efforts, external relations, and student-centered fellowships, certificate programs, and execution of IIEL's colloquium

In addition to effectuating IIEL conferences, colloquia and special events, and external relations and assisting in advancement efforts and student-centered fellowship and certificate programs, the Executive Director has sole responsibility over the management and execution of the Global Trade Academy. This includes program development, outreach and promotion, agenda and curriculum development, finding and inviting the right speakers, management of participants, moderating throughout the entire week of programming, and liaising with the Events, Communications and AV teams- among many other things.

In carrying out the above, the Executive Director is responsible for partnering with IIEL colleagues, global/transnational faculty and others at the Law Center and main campus, current and prospective students, universities and other collegial and research organizations around the world including supporting the programming and management of IIEL's initiatives - the Center on Inclusive Trade and Development and the Sovereign Debt Forum.

Qualifications
  • JD or a Master's degree in International Relations or closely related major
  • 5 to 7 years of administrative experience
  • Expertise in international economic law - preference for experience related to international trade
  • Experience in program management events management (virtual, in person, and hybrid)
  • Experience with developing budgets, writing grants, and successful fundraising initiatives
  • Effective team player with strong problem-solving, leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal)
  • Ability and flexibility to work mornings and evenings as needed for events
