Detailed Job Description
Rochester Institute of Technology, College of Art and Design, and the School of Film and Animation (SOFA) are inviting applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Live-Action Production. The Production Faculty member will teach courses in film production in at least two of the following areas: editing in AVID Media Composer and Premiere Pro, color grading using DaVinci Resolve and/or Baselight, as well as narrative and/or documentary storytelling.

Expertise in one or more of the following strengthens the application: basic film/digital production, basic sound design, screenwriting, business of film, and producing for features and/or broadcast. Courses will involve teaching undergraduate and graduate students the aesthetics and techniques of making films and focusing on a variety of skills and concepts in the production of narrative and documentary work.

The candidate should demonstrate success developing story structure and scene building in the edit room, as well as a solid understanding of camera formats, color spaces and deliverables for broadcast and/or theatrical presentation. The candidate should have a sound knowledge of filmmaking processes, current and emerging technologies, and an understanding of film history. The candidate must continue to actively produce creative work in their field.

The final candidate will be responsible for:
  • Teaching 5-6 courses per year ranging from first-year undergraduate to graduate level courses
  • Engaging in scholarly activities/research within film and media
  • Maintaining a high level of expertise in current technologies, trends, methodologies, and software developments in the professional community
  • Advising undergraduate and graduate students on SOFA program coursework
  • Participating in university, college, and school-level service, and community outreach
  • Faculty mentorship for graduate thesis films
  • Working with school faculty on program and curricular development


Department/College Description
THE DEPARTMENT: The internationally recognized School of Film and Animation (SOFA) offers BFA and MFA degrees in film production with emphasis in either Animation or Live-Action, as well as a BS degree in Motion Picture Science. SOFA provides a creative community where students have the opportunity to discover their unique talents and expressive potential, while at the same time developing the skills needed to fulfill any creative or technical role in the film and animation industry. Required Minimum Qualifications
  • MFA degree or equivalent terminal degree. In certain circumstances, exceptional professional and creative experience in a production-related field may be considered.
  • Professional filmmaking experience in narrative or documentary filmmaking
  • Teaching experience at the college level
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the College’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences
  • Extensive experience in film editing for theatrical and/or broadcast
