The Department of Natural Science at Peru State College invites applications for the Al Wheeler, Jr., Distinguished Chair in Environmental Management, Policy, and Sustainability. This position will develop an academic program in Environmental Management, Policy, and Sustainability and its related coursework. Peru State College is a small, rural, residential liberal arts college with a strong tradition in Natural Sciences focused on integrated organismal biology and biochemistry as a pathway for advancement to professional or graduate study. The Wheeler Distinguished Chair will include resources from an endowed fund generously provided by Dr. Al Wheeler, Jr., that can be used for research, student engagement experiences, conference travel, a speaker series, and other activities.

Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree or earned master’s degree followed by 30 hours of study toward advanced degree and three years of experience at the college level. Terminal degree required for tenure. The ideal candidate will be a broadly trained biologist with experience in organismal biology, the capacity to excel as a teacher, integrate into the departmental programs, and develop and sustain a productive research program that includes mentored undergraduate research.
  • A demonstrated ability for teaching excellence is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • We seek a colleague to teach ecology, other courses supporting the department’s introductory and pre-health curriculum, and new courses of the candidate’s interest and expertise, including a course in Biodiversity. Teaching duties are negotiated among program faculty to capitalize on faculty strengths. Teach a 12-hour load per semester of undergraduate coursework (courses will focus on the Environmental Management, Policy, and Sustainability Program once developed and approved); Develop and propose a program in Environmental Management, Policy, and Sustainability for College and Board consideration; Advise and mentor students; Provide service to the College and actively participate in campus life on the main campus in Peru, NE; Demonstrate active professional development and contribution to the academic discipline; Pursue continuous improvement of instructional practices; Implement student engagement practices in and outside the traditional learning space; Establish a modest but aggressive research program that includes mentored undergraduate research; Work effectively with a diverse student population, many of whom are first-generation college students.
