Position Summary

The Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a Director for Resource Management, a Director of Marketing & Communications, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for Assessment, a Director for the Career Management Center, and a Managing Director for the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business.

The Fowler College of Business offers a variety of programs, including an undergraduate and graduate degree in business administration and specialized masters degree programs. The college also houses several centers: the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate, the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business, the Corporate Governance Institute, the Institute for Inclusion and Diversity, the Center for Integrated Marketing Communication, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and the Aztec Consulting Center, which are critical for the implementation of its strategic plan.

The Graduate Programs Advisor/Recruiter serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business assigned to the Graduate Programs Office. The Advisor/Recruiter is an essential and integral member of Graduate Programs team and works under the supervision of the Director of Graduate Programs. This position is responsible for advising and recruiting applicants on admission and degree requirements and providing input regarding the acceptance or denial of applicants to the MBA, MSA, MSIS and MSBA programs. The Advisor/Recruiter will work with the FCB Marketing & Communications (MarComm) department closely on reaching potential new students through CRM and social media channels. It requires coordination with other Graduate Programs staff to ensure applications are processed accurately and effectively. The position also evaluates degrees awarded for acceptability and core requirement waivers.

The Advisor/Recruiter is responsible for advising on all policies, procedures and decisions regarding continuing students and inactive students. They make judgments regarding all administrative materials and situations pertaining to all continuing students as it relates to solving their advising needs, ensuring students understand their graduation requirements, helping them select appropriate classes, and providing assistance, when needed. The Advisor/Recruiter is also responsible for the development and continuous improvement of advising programs for incoming and continuing MBA, MSA, MSIS, and MSBA students.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Specialized Skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff and to work as a member of a team.
  • Experience using MS Office Suite and a familiarity with web-based applications.
  • Flexibility, and attention to detail are required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information and records.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience working in a college or university's admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student service-related office.
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size.
  • Experience in student advising.
  • Professional experience in recruiting prospective students for admission to a university and/or an academic program.
  • Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies governing a public or private university either in person, on the phone or via email.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, and effective public speaking capability.
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Strong computer and database management skills.
  • Ability to use initiative and creativity for situations involving changing guidelines and regulations or when existing procedures and guidelines must be applied to unusual circumstances.
  • Ability to carry out day-to-day assignments without immediate direction.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,610 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month.
