Program Director, College Student Personnel Administration Program

 

 

The Counseling Programs at James Madison University are seeking an exceptional Counselor Educator to join the award‐winning faculty in the Department of Graduate Psychology and serve as the Program Director for our College Student Personnel Administration Program. In addition to the College Student Personnel Administration Program, our programs include three CACREP‐accredited programs including Clinical Mental Health Counseling M.A./Ed.S., School Counseling M.Ed./Ed.S., and Counseling and Supervision Ph.D. (https://psyc.jmu.edu/counseling/index.html). The full‐time (10 month), tenure track position will start in August, 2023 and will be filled at the rank of advanced Assistant or Associate Professor.

The College Student Personnel Administration concentration contains full- and part-time master’s degree tracks (36 credit-hours) and a post-master’s degree certificate program (12 credit-hours). Students engaged in the full-time degree program are co-engaged in graduate assistantships (tuition and stipend) and conduct two 150-hour practicum experiences. Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The position includes the following responsibilities: teaching two master’s-level courses each semester, conducting scholarship, and providing service to the department, college, university, and/or profession. The role of Program Director also includes responsibility for administrating the program, adhering to Academic Affairs’ policies, and collaborating with Student Affairs partners. In addition, the program director is charged with enhancing the CSPA program and supporting scholarship across the counseling programs to include engagement on doctoral dissertation committees. This hire will support JMU’s move to R2 and National University status. This individual will assist in infusing culturally-relevant and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) perspectives into the existing curriculum. Although the specific area of scholarly and teaching emphasis is counselor education, preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong aptitude for scholarship and training in one or more of the following areas: college student development, counseling theories, counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and practicum/internship support.

 

 

 

Faculty research expectations are consistent with the department’s and JMU’s tenure and promotion expectations which are available on the university website in the Faculty Handbook and on the Academic Affairs website. The candidate will have opportunities for professional development.

 

 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Applicants should possess a doctoral degree in Counseling or Counselor Education and Supervision, have experience in student affairs, college student personnel administration, or higher education, and be able to document successful teaching and supervision within a graduate program. Identity as a counselor educator with an interest in program leadership, as well as teaching and mentoring graduate students. The successful candidate will share our philosophy that cultivating the personhood of the student-counselor in a corollary to academic instruction. We therefore seek a candidate committed to joining and fostering culture that promotes both the personal growth and professional development of our students.

 


Evidence of strong clinical mental health counseling skills, understanding of the field of college student personnel administration, as well as the ability to teach a variety of courses at the master’s level, is essential. 

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from a CACREP-accredited doctoral program.
