Statement of Job:

The Computer Science department at the University of Southern Maine invites applicants for two tenure track positions at the Assistant Professor level for our Fall 2023 semester. We welcome applicants in all areas of specialization, but especially encourage candidates with research interests in Software Engineering, Database Systems, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Distributed Systems to apply. Teaching responsibilities typically include core computer science courses and advanced courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise.

Information science has been identified as a key area for growth by the Maine government and the Alfond Foundation and the university is investing in research and instruction to meet the need. The new faculty member will be part of a strong undergraduate Computer Science program and help with the current resumption of the MS in Computer Science degree.

The Computer Science department is part of the College of Science, Technology, and Health (CSTH), which has departments in mathematics, statistics, sciences, engineering, and health. The variety of programs provides a solid platform for interdisciplinary scientific collaborations to build nationally and internationally recognized research groups, which the College and University administration support.

The successful candidate will join a department and institution that care deeply about student academic success and the development of faculty to be effective teachers. The department meets annually to discuss teaching effectiveness and student learning and mentor junior faculty on practices. The university provides a variety of programs and financial support for faculty to improve their pedagogical skills. Criteria for tenure include scholarship publishable in scientific, peer-reviewed outlets. It is highly desirable to engage students in research projects and activities. The university provides incentives and assistance for the preparation of grant applications and article submissions.

The targeted starting date for this position will begin in Fall 2023 on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $90,000. This is an on campus, in-person teaching position.
