Job Details

Gordon College seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Music who has expertise in the areas of orchestral and band conducting. Additionally, candidates must display a broad range of skills that will allow them to contribute to the Department of Music across a variety of course offerings, in support of both the College’s liberal arts curriculum and its well-respected music program.

The Gordon College Department of Music is comprised of 6 full-time faculty members and over 25 adjunct and part-time faculty members – many of whom are outstanding educators and renowned performers. The Department offers four music degrees that are accredited by NASM: Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master of Music in Music Education; concentrations in Composition and Music in Worship; and a Music Minor. Additionally, hundreds of non-music majors participate in the music program through choral and instrumental ensembles and Core music classes. The Department of Music is housed in the state-of-the-art Phillips Music Center. 

The music program at Gordon College is one that emphasizes whole musicianship, rigorous musical and academic training, and provides a nurturing environment in which our students can fully realize their God-given potential. Graduates of the Gordon College Department of Music serve in the public, charter and private schools as music teachers, attend reputable graduate schools and conservatories for performance and music education, perform in professional orchestras, teach in private music studios, and work in the fields of music administration, music therapy and church worship. The Music Education program at Gordon has had a 100% teacher placement rate for all graduates seeking positions for more than 15 years.

 

Responsibilities for the successful candidate will include:

1. Teaching the following possible courses (to be determined based on qualifications, experience and Departmental need):

  • Gordon Symphony Orchestra
  • Gordon Symphonic Band (a combined student/community ensemble)
  • Core Curriculum music classes such as “Arts in Concert”
  • Conducting
  • Music Education methods classes
  • Applied lessons and/or chamber music coaching

2. Recruiting and retention of music majors. This will include interaction with prospective students, guest workshops at schools and festivals, serving as a clinician at conferences, maintaining a professional profile as a conductor.

3. Community engagement and audience development especially as it pertains to the Orchestra and Symphonic Band.

4. Department service: faculty meetings, adjudicating juries and oversight of juries for woodwinds/brass/percussion area, adjudication of music auditions for prospective students, student advising, and off-campus opportunities for students.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Completed (or ABD) DMA in orchestral conducting
  • Successful experience teaching at the collegiate level
  • Significant professional and artistic profile as an orchestral/band conductor
  • Successful experience with community/youth music programming
  • Ability to build relationships with music educators in the field
  • A passion for teaching and mentoring of undergraduates
  • A strong commitment to the Christian mission of the college
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills that cross departmental and disciplinary boundaries
