Job Details

Are you seeking an opportunity to lead the academic affairs operations of a career-oriented liberal arts college guided by an employee-driven strategic plan? Do you have an unwavering commitment to educational quality coupled with an entrepreneurial mindset? Do you have an interest in working with faculty, a provost, and a president dedicated to the achievement of strategic goals focused on academic growth and innovation? If your answers to all three of these questions are yes, McPherson College is a place where you could make an important difference.

The ideal VPAA candidate will possess a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Successful teaching experience and a record of academic affairs leadership/administration in a post-secondary institution, at the level of dean or above, is required. History of effectively using a collaborative approach to working with other key operating units on campus such as student affairs, enrollment, admissions, and athletics is highly desirable. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to function collegially in a small college environment are of paramount importance.

Other essential personal characteristics and professional qualifications needed for the position include outstanding written and oral communication skills and a record of ethical, trustworthy, and credible conduct. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion will be an expectation of the person hired, as will be an ability to delegate responsibilities and authority while also maintaining accountability. A clear understanding of shared governance and an ability to balance faculty needs with administrative priorities will be necessary to function successfully in the position. Being capable of making decisions based on the best interests of the college and the students it serves is an important requirement of the next VPAA.

As the leader of the comprehensive instructional program, the Vice President for Academic Affairs will work closely with the Provost and others on campus to align academic priorities with McPherson College’s strategic plan. The successful candidate will oversee experiential learning, interdisciplinary studies, internships, and other hands-on educational opportunities used to prepare graduates to be career-ready on their first day of work. This is done within a liberal arts and sciences teaching and learning community devoted to producing creative thinkers and effective communicators. McPherson College graduates are problem-solvers who easily earn the respect of others because of their work ethic and service-oriented mentality.

McPherson College is located in McPherson, Kansas, about one hour north of Wichita, the most populated city in the state. The institution is currently poised to begin an unprecedented period of growth. This is being fueled by recently having received the largest-ever single commitment to a small liberal arts college in the United States. The anonymous double match estate commitment is worth $500 million and over time will allow the college to reimagine and reinvent its campus while pursuing initiatives that further enhance the student experience. Other transformational commitments from alumni and friends enable the college to focus on long-term academic program growth and development, and investment in campus facilities while making certain students continue to have the opportunity to graduate with little to no debt.

The college offers opportunities to reach your potential and join a community devoted to developing whole persons through scholarship, participation, and service. McPherson College was founded in 1887 by members of the Church of the Brethren and remains committed to the values of the church: peace and justice, ethical behavior, and putting faith into action. It was the only college in Kansas honored as a 2022 Great College to Work For. Outstanding employee benefits include a 10% contribution by the college to retirement plans after one year of service. Noteworthy is how employee health insurance premiums have not increased since 2012.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received and will be treated as highly confidential. Materials received by February 20, 2023, can be assured full consideration. Applications will continue to be accepted and considered until the position is filled.
