Position Summary

The Assistant Director is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the residence halls and supervision of 2-5 officers of administration and the leadership and implementation of one of three functional areas (50%): 1-leadership initiatives and advising RHA/NRHH; 2-conduct & crisis response; 3-Residence Life Leader (Resident Assistant) selection and training, social justice education. Assistant Directors support and create content for the residential curricular model which highlights the educational priority: residents who live on campus will thrive by engaging in and creating just communities; and the 5 residence life learning goals: cultural competence, well-being, integrated learning, relationships in the community, and responsibility.

The Assistant Director is part of the Residence Life Leadership Team responsible for fostering intellectual stimulation in the residence halls by drawing upon the academic resources offered by the faculty and that of a research university and the larger community. The Leadership Team collaborates together to cultivate strategic relationships with academic partners including but not limited to First-Year Programs, Undergraduate Education and Student Success, Robert D. Clark Honors College, UO Libraries, and specific academic departments, colleges, and research centers in developing and implementing Academic Residential Programs. Additionally, the Assistant Director partners with Student Services and Enrolment Management and Student Life departments to create, support, and achieve successful living-learning communities, and to expand the learning outcomes and co-curricular academic initiatives throughout the residence hall system. Ultimately, the living-learning communities of University Housing aspire to broaden first-year and returning students' vision of what it means to be a “learner” at a liberal arts academy and research extensive institution; deepen students' understanding of how knowledge is created and disseminated; and integrate their residential and academic lives. The Assistant Director effectively works and teams up with all Housing units, Human Resources, Business Office, Facilities, Dining Services, Information Technology, and Marketing to accomplish the strategic plan of University Housing. Furthermore, the Assistant Director supports the implementation and oversight of assessment instruments to evaluate the efficacy of general residential and academic residential communities. A principal pedagogical objective of the leadership team is to expand the academic enterprise beyond the walls of the classroom and foster out-of-class interaction between students, staff, and faculty so that learning and academics become an integral and essential part of the residential experience. As a member of the Residence Life Leadership Team, each Assistant Director oversees the coordination of various functions of Residence Life.
