Department Summary

The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 52 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, ten researchers, ten postdocs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeritus faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and adjunct instructors.

Position Summary

As a member of the Oregon Hazards Laboratory, you will be a critical part of a research group with a mission to use infrastructure, software, and novel technologies to protect all Oregonians from wildfires, earthquakes, floods, landslides, and other environmental hazards. The Research Software Programmer works closely with the Assistant Director of Wildfire Technology, Lead Research Systems Administrator, and the University of Nevada Reno Seismolab IT personnel to support the ALERTWildfire Software as a Service Platform, including both the front-end website (alertwildfire.org) and the backend processes used to serve wildfire camera data to the public and first responders in real-time. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Wildfire Technology. Tasks will include ensuring the continued functionality of the platform, developing and deploying new features, and exploring how to evaluate and integrate novel technologies such as third-party AI detection solutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.

    Professional Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following: Node/NestJS, MySQL, Vue/Nuxt, TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Ability to respond to critical bugs and troubleshoot issues across multiple modules.
  • Ability to support full-stack web applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and coordinate with systems administrators, software engineers, and external vendors to resolve problems with custom-developed software in a timely manner.
  • Flexible problem-solving skills.
  • Communication skills to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of work experience supporting full-stack web applications.
  • Understanding of high-level DevOps and security practices.
  • Experience with AWS cloud platform.
  • Knowledge of the GO programming language.
  • Experience with docker virtualization and docker container orchestration.
  • History of working with streaming video and/or the Axis camera API.
  • Experience ingesting, processing, and presenting research data from real-time monitoring systems.
  • Experience working in or with institutions of higher education, research centers, or within a complex organization.
