The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a Perkins grant-funded position as the Coordinator of the First-Year Mentoring Program and At-Risk Students.

The college continues to pilot the First-Year Mentoring Program, which began during the 2020-2021 academic year.  The program was designed to assist 50 new AAS students of color and those who are in or were in the foster care system in their transition to college by pairing them with an upper-class student who serves as their mentor for the academic year. Students in the program participate in activities related to career development and student support, including the programs sponsored by the Writing and Speaking Studio, Academic Skills/Tutoring,  Student Activities, Career and Internship Services, and the Academic Advisement Center.

Job Description:

The Student Academic Support area is part of faculty and student academic support in the Academic Affairs division. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Academic Support, the Coordinator of the First-Year Mentoring Program is responsible for the coordination and management of the First-Year Mentoring Program. The successful candidate must demonstrate competencies in the areas of programming, strategic thinking, effective communication, and emotional intelligence. 

  • The Coordinator of the First-Year Mentoring Program (FYMP) and At-Risk Students will include but not be limited to:
  • Continuing the overall development and growth of the First-Year Mentoring Program.
  • Recruiting, training, educating, and managing the peer mentors and mentees.
  • Coordinating with the 5 liaisons of the FYMP  from the areas of Academic Advisement, Academic Skills/Tutoring Center, Career and Internship Services, Student Life, and the Writing and Speaking Studio on the development of programming and assessment of activities.
  • Managing budget, grants, and conducting program assessments.

This is a dynamic and interdisciplinary position with opportunities for campus-wide leadership in the areas of student engagement, retention, and programming.

  • Represent the program in college-wide conversations about engaging at-risk students
  • Model professional behavior that prepares students and peer tutors for entry into their chosen fields.

Instructional Design/Student Development and Success

  • Understand today's students, their academic and developmental needs, and counsel, consult, or mentor them as needed to ensure they are successful in meeting their educational goals.
  • Advocate for student learning needs/success.
  • Assist FYMP liaisons in developing engaging programs that promote connection to the FIT campus, student development, and intellectual growth.

Technology

  • Show an awareness of how evolving technology influences speaking and presentation skills and opportunities for communication.
  • Use technology to enhance professional productivity.
  • Optimize the use of technology to improve service delivery to students, faculty, and the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • The successful candidate must have a professional record of experience working with college students in advisement or a related career field that demonstrates their ability to engage, mentor, and develop programming and budgeting. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and experience in First-Year programming and development as well as retention.

Additional Information:

Days/Hours: M-F, 12pm-5pm, in person (25 hours per week); work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.

Hiring Rate: $50.00 per hour

Terms: The Coordinator of the First-Year Mentoring Program is a non-benefits eligible position that receives funding by grant.
