Job Description Summary
This person will meet directly with faculty and staff to gather requirements for servers and projects; determine server specifications, establish server and application configurations; work with Wharton Information Security and the Solutions Design and Implementation (SDI) team to design system security and incident response procedures and manage firewalls; develop scripts for use across systems, adhere to and inform change management processes; implement interfaces among servers, plan operating system upgrade strategies, implement data stores, and manage system performance in response to changing environment and usage patterns; and respond to problems in the cloud or VMware operating environments.

Job Description

This person will meet directly with faculty and staff to gather requirements for servers and projects; determine server specifications, establish server and application configurations; work with Wharton Information Security and the Solutions Design and Implementation (SDI) team to design system security and incident response procedures and manage firewalls; develop scripts for use across systems, adhere to and inform change management processes; implement interfaces among servers, plan operating system upgrade strategies, implement data stores, and manage system performance in response to changing environment and usage patterns; and respond to problems in the cloud or VMware operating environments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to manage routine operational tasks for systems and services supported by the Wharton School's Client Technology Services SDI team. These services include (but are not limited to) such fundamental operational systems as: Student and Staff Printing Services, Endpoint Detection and Response, Software License Management servers, Student Virtual Lab Service, Endpoint Mgmt Service (including software repository, software packaging/deployment, and configuration management), Patching Service, Remote Support Service, Asset Management service, and Active Directory support. An important part of the position will be working with SDI and other teams to author and maintain intuitive, and comprehensible documentation related to the operation and management of said services.

This person will also assist in developing short and long-term goals for continuously improving the services provided, and will collaborate with colleagues across Wharton Computing to help enhance overall IT Services at Wharton, as well as at the university level where opportunities may arise. They will work with Wharton Computing colleagues and Wharton staff members to transition key services and resources to cloud-hosted solutions where applicable, preferring a cloud-first model; identify areas where consolidating processes and services across Wharton technologies can provide value, and work with peers to streamline, research, document and implement said services; deploy, administer, and maintain servers and shared services for the administrative staff of the Wharton School, applying SaaS and "Systems as Code" models where feasible.

A Senior level candidate will meet the above requirements, and additionally be able to: research and design next generation cloud solutions, lead multiple server projects, serve as subject matter expert on multiple technologies, provide strategic leadership within the SDI team, and also when engaging teams outside of SDI (whether at Wharton or at the University level), mentor more junior staff, and where appropriate manage direct or indirect report(s) as assigned.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Individual must have: proven troubleshooting abilities, strong organizational and communication skills, and a drive to provide the highest level of customer service. Applicants must have: the ability to work independently, to collaborate/communicate effectively in a team, or to take a leadership role when required; the ability to work well under conditions of stress and rapid change; the ability to work extended hours, including occasional nights and weekends for on-call or project requirements; and must be physically able to lift and carry 50 lbs.

Applicants are expected to have prior experience administering Windows server and Windows 10 client products. They must be familiar with software package deployment, print management (Pharos print experience is a significant plus), Microsoft AD/LDAP, Group Policy, DFS/Windows share permissions, and provisioning/endpoint management solutions (BigFix preferred). Also necessary are a firm grasp of: networking basics (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.), security fundamentals and best practices, and DevOps/"System as Code" concepts. This position will involve creating/maintaining scripts for automation of routine tasks, so familiarity with PowerShell, Python or similar scripting tools is paramount.

Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas will be strongly preferred: technology support in a higher-ed environment; managing servers/storage/workstations as code in a cloud environment (AWS and Azure in particular); familiarity with SAN/NAS solutions; experience with SQL 2008 or later; familiarity with Terraform or Ansible; experience with multimedia devices and software; familiarity with version control systems (Git preferred). ITIL and project management experience are also desirable.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
