Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College is currently seeking an Assistant Professor of Computer Science to join the Department of Computer Science and Technology (CS&T) in School of Science, Mathematics and Technology. The successful candidate will develop and teach online courses, independent studies, and study groups in their expertise area, and serve learners across New York State, nationally, and world-wide. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring (advising) students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines and guiding mentees as they pursue individualized degree programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across the faculty role. Engagement in an active research agenda and ongoing service to the college are also expected. SUNY Empire supports faculty as they pursue scholarly work and engage in professional development activities that enhance their teaching and research skills.

The Department of CS&T offers bachelor's degrees under the Science, Mathematics, and Technology area of study, with a concentration in Computer Science. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues to update and expand the department's existing curriculum, leading to a registered program in Computer Science. Students who pursue degrees in this academic area will gain proficiency in this ever-evolving field and be prepared to pursue relevant careers and/or graduate level studies. The candidate will develop and teach core courses in Computer Science and electives in their area of expertise. Candidates with curriculum development or relevant industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in Computer Science or a closely related field; ABD considered.
  • College-level teaching experience in relevant content areas.
  • Pursuit of an active research agenda in their field.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Strong communication, technical, and organizational skills.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult teaching and learning.
  • Experience with teaching in online learning environments.
  • Experience with curriculum development or relevant industry experience.
  • Ability to support and engage with external partnerships.

Special Information:

  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill college commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • SUNY Empire provides faculty with a flexible work environment to meet the needs of our mostly distance learners. The successful candidate can be located at one of our sites throughout the state, including Selden, New York City, Saratoga Springs, or Rochester, with robust telecommuting available.

Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, Assistant Professor, 12-month appointment, salary commensurate with experience.
