Lecturer, Director of Choir and Vocal Studies

The Department of Music at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a full-time Lecturer who will also serve as Director of Choir and Director of Vocal Studies. The successful candidate will begin in Fall 2023 and will be eligible for renewal and consideration for promotion up to the rank of Teaching Professor, as outlined in the Arts & Sciences Policy on Full-Time Teaching-Track Faculty.

The person in this role will assume a variety of responsibilities related to the performance programs in a liberal arts department with active faculty engagement at all levels of undergraduate and graduate instruction and will teach in and coordinate the applied voice division. This individual will also lead all aspects of the University Choir program. Duties include: supervising degree recitals and divisional performance classes, teaching vocal lessons and undergraduate lecture courses such as “Science of Singing” and “Singers’ Performance Workshop,” managing teachers in the voice division, working with colleagues on curriculum development and departmental assessment, and conducting, managing and providing artistic direction for the University Choir program. The department will support the successful candidate in pursuing opportunities for professional development during the duration of the position. Teaching track faculty will not be evaluated on or expected to engage in research or scholarship as part of their appointment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Music

• Evidence of successful university teaching in both applied voice and classroom settings. A commitment to working with a wide range of students to improve their individual technique, musical understanding, artistry, and ensemble skills
• Evidence of successful teaching of students with varying levels of experience and skill, including both music majors and non-majors
• Broad knowledge of vocal literature and performance practice for European concert music and opera, musical theater, jazz, popular music, and other traditions as applicable
• Strong knowledge of the choral canon, a commitment to diversity in programming, and a passion for new ways of presenting in the choral arts
• Keyboard proficiency
• Familiarity with languages generally encountered in vocal and choral literature
• Demonstrated evidence of successful leadership and administrative experience
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

• DMA or Artist Diploma
• Performance experience in solo voice, musical theater, and/or opera productions, and/or other traditions as applicable
• Participation in professional academic and/or music associations
• Demonstrated leadership of a successful choral program
• Demonstrated record of excellence in choral conducting and program building
