The CHRO develops, recommends, and implements approved Human Resources policies and programs for the University. Major areas of oversight include organizational planning, performance and talent management, employee relations culture including DEI, workforce analytics, and employee services (i.e., payroll, leaves of absences, compliance, and workers' compensation). As a trusted advisor the CHRO Partners closely with the EVP&T on Human Resources matters and assures Human Resources initiatives are appropriately aligned with the University's business strategies and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Purpose Statement:
Lead areas of oversight with an enterprise mindset to ensure the achievement of the University's growth expectations, key success factors, strategies, and initiatives. Applying the University Commitments of Leadership, create and maintain a structure and team that continuously improves and innovates to attain high levels of engagement, service excellence, operational efficiency, and accountability. Build, develop, and manage programs and resources that strengthen the University’s's leadership pipeline, and competitive capabilities. The CHRO is responsible for the development and implementation of Human Resources initiatives, policies, and programs for the University’s, which support and enable growth, and are in alignment with the University’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Formulates, recommends, and implements as approved, Human Resources policies and objectives for the organization. This includes both short-term and long-term goals and objectives for the areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a team player of the Business Affairs Senior Management team, participating and adding to strategic decisions and opportunities of the University. Fosters and maintains strong internal relationships with key business partners.
  • Participates Monthly in the President’s Cabinet to brief the Executive Leadership team on HR Roadmap progress.
  • Develops, maintains, and continuously improves process, systems and technology, measurement practices and metrics. Driving an HR Transformation Roadmap toward success over the next three years.
  • Administers and manages the Employee Engagement survey. Works with our third-party vendor to identify and communicate areas for opportunity. Oversees the action planning process.
  • Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish positive employer/employee relationships and promote a high level of employee engagement and performance.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to University compliance.
  • Fosters a positive and engaging work environment for each team member by promoting skill development, coaching for improvement and growth, inspiring others through words and actions, ensuring positive employee morale throughout University, and embracing our mission, vision, and core values. Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting Human Resources function (OSHA, EEO, ERISA, Wage & Hour). Monitors exposure of the University. With consultation and approval from the EVP&T, directs the preparation of information requested or required for compliance.
  • Protects interests of employees and the University in accordance with University Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations. Evaluates and approves recommendations for disciplinary actions up to and including terminations. Reviews employee appeals through complaint procedure.
  • As approved by the EVP&T, directs a process of organizational planning that evaluates structure, job design, and manpower forecasting throughout the University. Develops and coordinates program activities, to include workforce analytics, employee engagement and retention, and turnover across departmental lines. Oversees effective implementation and results.
  • Trains, develops, motivates, and evaluates the performance of Human Resources direct reports. Keeps informed of general trends and new developments in Human Resources, laws and practices; maintains contact with Human Resources professionals within the industry and community as coordinated with the EVP&T and may represent University at industry and community related events. Plans, develops and once approved, implements the annual Human Resources budgets as assigned by the EVP&T.
  • Leads comprehensive performance management initiatives, including working with team leads to identify key goals, objectives, and other criteria to support the growth and development of employees.
  • Develops and executes HR strategies and activities that cultivate growth, innovation, employee engagement and organizational effectiveness.
  • Partners with leadership on value added strategic priorities such as employee culture initiatives, employee engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Serves as a coach and advocate across all levels of the organization; provides guidance on employee relations matters and leads issue resolution.
  • Create and champion high-impact practices, events, and activities designed to foster a strong, differentiated, unified University culture.
  • Identify key performance indicators for the University's human resource and talent management functions; assesses the organization's success and market competitiveness based on these metrics. Develop long-term strategic goals to ensure the ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent for the University and engage in programs to expand the pool of qualified, diverse candidates for the industry.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee the University's performance management system to effectively align yearly University objectives with departmental and individual goals.
  • Develops and implements HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy. Implements and manages global HR-related initiatives including, employee policies and procedures, onboarding and off-boarding practices, leave management, recognition and retention strategies, occupational health and safety, training and development, workers compensation, and disciplinary matters, dispute resolution and investigations.
  • Direct, manage, develop, and foster a culture of inclusion and create a DEI and ESG roadmap with a focus on achieving measurable, sustainable results.
  • Act as diversity and ESG advocate, partner with and advise Talent Acquisition and Leadership to ensure the attraction, engagement, and retention of a diverse workforce.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • SHPR or PHR Certification preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of broad Human Resources experience with a clear record of advancement, including a minimum of five (5) years Human Resources management experience at the Vice President or Director level.

$156,980.00-$204,085.00

Samuel Merritt University currently provides base salary ranges for all positions-on job advertisements-in the United States based on local requirements. Individual compensation will ultimately be determined based on a variety of relevant factors including but-not limited to qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant skills.
