Primary Purpose of Position:
The Director of Infrastructure reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), is a key member of the CIO's leadership team and serves a key role in university leadership, working closely with senior administration, academic leaders, researchers and the campus community. The Director is an advocate for North Carolina Central University's overall technology infrastructure inclusive of networks, systems, telephony, and research computing. This position works with the CIO to develop strategic campus infrastructure services, plans and budgets. The Director leads the development and implementation of these plans and leverages collaborations, campus-wide resources, relationships with senior leadership to design technologies and solutions to meet the institution's strategic goals. This position must be knowledgeable of complex networks, cloud technologies, and a variety of emerging technologies with the ability to discern best options using cost/benefit analysis. The complexity of this position requires a leadership approach that is engaging, innovative, and collaborative, with a sophisticated ability to work with other leaders to set the best balance between infrastructure and other priorities at the campus level.

Minimum Education/Experience:
The emphasis of this position is on Infrastructure Planning and Implementation. The candidate should possess a sophisticated ability to work with other leaders and to set the best balance between infrastructure and other priorities at the campus level. Experience as a Director of Infrastructure, developing and administering an information program including upgrades, project management, policies and procedures in a complex higher education environment is highly desirable.The position requires an intelligent, articulate, consensus-building, and a persuasive leader who can work effectively with senior administration, academic leaders, and the campus community and communicate information related concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical staff.Demonstrated experience advising and collaborating with senior management in higher education is preferred. The ability to work in a team/collaborative environment with a broad range of constituencies is essential.Working knowledge and experience in the regulatory environment of information security, working with auditors and vendors is highly desirable.Significant experience in leading a team in implementing or managing infrastructure, networking, cloud, identity management, disaster recovery and other technologies is highly desirable.A bachelor’s degree in information systems or other related field and/or an advanced degree is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • At least 5 years of work experience in information technology infrastructure management including leading a team.
  • Extensive experience with developing strategic plans.
  • Hands-on experience with business requirements gathering/analysis.
  • Proven experience in systems design and development.
  • Working technical knowledge of current systems software, protocols, and standards, including Palo Alto Firewall, Cisco Network, VX Rail, VMWare highly desirable.[NC1]
  • Strong knowledge of hardware and software evaluation principles and practice.
  • Proven project planning and management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent technical architecture and technical support documentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and consultative skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into emerging technologies and trends, standards, and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
