Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring a Mental Health Counselor/Substance Abuse Educator to support the Counseling Services team. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

This position is a 12 month/40 hour per week position. Provide short-term individual, couples, group, and crisis counseling services to students at Prescott campus under the direct supervision of the Counseling Director. Provide leadership for university’s substance abuse prevention efforts in accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act: coordinate a comprehensive substance abuse prevention program, informed by professionally-accepted and empirically-supported best practices; This position-holder will also be responsible for all outreach efforts of the counseling department for mental health and also drug and alcohol education.

Job Duties:

Clinical and Other Services Responsibilities:

Provide short-term individual, couples, group, and crisis counseling services to students at Prescott campus under the direct supervision of the Counseling Director. Responsible for assessment, intake, suicide and self-harm risk assessment, walk-in triage, crisis counseling, and documentation. Must work collaboratively with Counseling Director and contracted psychologists. Provide consultation for concerned faculty members, staff, students, and parents. Maintain ethically sound record keeping of all student counseling interactions. Stay abreast of current counseling practices and research by attending conferences and training sessions. Provide backup coverage for Counseling Director during some holidays, and vacation time.

Provide leadership for university substance abuse prevention efforts, counseling outreach, and wellness education. Assess campus needs and current practices. Develop and implement educational programs that contribute to student learning objectives. Provide structured educational sessions and workshops for sanctioned students and collaborate with Associate Dean of Students, student conduct staff, and program administration. Provide special programming such as mental health training for faculty, staff, and students of different campus populations based on-campus needs. Establish working relationships with relevant departments and offices on campus. Also will also be responsible for overseeing outreach efforts using technology and social media, including the counseling website.

Other duties as required: i.e. Learning to use Titanium EMR system. Assisting Counseling Center with operational duties such as scheduling, answering phones, and assisting staff when asked. Canceling appointments when needed with clients. Making appointments for future visits with students. Checking students out when reviewing dictation. Establishing community outreach as needed with local mental health providers.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a related field. Associate level or independently licensed in the state of Arizona, or near completion LAC is preferred. Experience in assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of interventions for depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug use/abuse, and developmental concerns frequently faced by college students is required. Training and experience with Motivational Interviewing and Alcohol and Other Drug programming are required. Must understand DSM-5, have familiarity with frequently used assessment tools such as the BDI, BAI, DES-11, AUDIT and ADHD Amen checklist. Must be able to do public presentations.

Prefer a minimum of two years work-related experience in a university counseling center. Experience can be substituted with education. Experience working with many different facets of a college campus community and providing services to a diverse population of students. Experience with college counseling programming, and working with adults in an outpatient setting.

All activities of the Mental Health Counselor will be overseen by the Counseling Director. Must be able to handle increased stress levels and multi-task. Must be computer literate and able to work independently. Must be willing to learn and work well under the direction of others. Will be responsible for presentations to ERAU campus. Will also work with local psychologists for evaluations as needed.

Must be able to work closely with Counseling staff. A great sense of humor is a must! This is a team environment and flexibility is required.

Required licenses, certificates, and /or security clearances:

Licensed as an LPC in the state of Arizona. Liability insurance provided by the University.

Required skills, knowledge, abilities:

Experience in assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of interventions for depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug use/abuse and developmental concerns frequently faced by college students is required. Familiarity with frequently used assessment tools such as the BDI, BAI, DES-11,AUDIT, and ADD/ADHD Amen checklist is desired. Knowledge of DSM-5 preferred.

• Ability to manage high stress situations due to volume and variety of concerns and responsibilities
• Ability to be flexible due to frequent shifting of priorities and management of crisis or urgent situations

• Independent licensure in state of Arizona preferred.
• At least 2 years of professional counseling experience in a higher education setting preferred.
