DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Geography Department (https://www.csus.edu/geog/) offers a B.A. in Geography that features balanced preparation in physical and human geography, geographic skills and techniques, and regional study. Four concentrations within the major allow for specializations in human geography, physical geography, GIS, and planning (http://catalog.csus.edu/colleges/natural-sciences-mathematics/geography/). Department faculty and geography majors collaborate with programs across the university, notably Environmental Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Two department computer labs support training in GIS, GPS, cartography, and remote sensing, and allow students to pursue independent research projects. The department also houses the campus Paleoecology Lab.

POSITION DETAILS:

This Assistant Professor position is teaching intensive; the successful candidate will teach courses in the Geography major as well as in the University's General Education program. We seek applicants committed to teaching a diverse group of undergraduate students.

We seek a broadly-trained human geographer with teaching and research expertise in the field of political ecology at the rank of assistant professor. The specific area of focus within political ecology is open. Areas that could meet the department's needs include, but are not limited to: urban political ecology, energy, climate and environmental justice, and health. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to incorporating diverse approaches and perspectives into their teaching. All regional areas of expertise will be considered, however candidates with expertise in Latin America will be given preference.

The successful candidate will contribute to Sacramento State's Anchor University initiative by bridging active social scientific inquiry with decisions made at the State Capitol. The successful candidate will also help support the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion by strengthening the department's role in educating students on the linkages between nature, power, culture, and political economy.

The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 - $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $74,642.

JOB DUTIES:

Duties will include:

• Developing and teaching upper division courses in the candidate's areas of specialization.
• Teaching other undergraduate courses, including introductory courses.
• Advising students.
• Engaging in scholarly and/or creative activities.
• Establishing working relationships within the university and in the community, such as with local and regional public agencies.
• Providing professional service within the department, college, and/or university.
• Contribute to Sacramento State's Anchor University initiative by bridging active social scientific inquiry with decisions made at the State Capitol.
• Support the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion by strengthening the department's role in educating students on the linkages between nature, power, culture, and political economy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

• A Ph.D. in Geography is required, or a Ph.D. in a closely-related field with substantial coursework in Geography. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctorate by August 2023.
• A background in geography and political ecology demonstrated through teaching, research, and/or work activities. Areas of political ecology that could meet the department's needs include, but are not limited to: urban political ecology, energy, climate and environmental justice, and health.
• Demonstrated commitment to effective pedagogy in undergraduate geography education.
• Demonstrated engagement in a program of scholarly activity through academic research and/or practice-based study.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students from backgrounds underrepresented in geography as well as non-traditional students.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving undergraduate students, including teaching, academic advising, pedagogical innovation, and supervision of undergraduate research.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED:

• If the terminal degree is in a field other than Geography, a Master's and/or Bachelor's degree (or equivalent level) in Geography
• Research and/or teaching experience with subjects related to Latin America
• Demonstrated potential to cultivate relationships with local or regional governments as well as local non-governmental neighborhood and community groups
• Commitment to collaborative research with undergraduate students and other faculty
• Prior teaching experience at the college or university level.
