The Department of Health, Physical Education, Exercise Science (HPEEX)at Norfolk State University is a part of the School of Education.  The department offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with concentrations in Health Fitness Instructor (HFI), Health Wellness Rehabilitation (HWR), Kinesiotherapy (KT), and Health Physical Education P-12 (HPE).  The Department offers educational opportunities in teacher licensure and non-teacher licensure programs.  All teacher licensure programs are approved by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation for Teacher Education (now CAEP).

The successful candidate for BOTH the Exercise Science and the Health Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position will be expected to:

  • Conduct scholarly research and publish in respected refereed scholarly journals and/or academic presses. 
  • Participate in scholarly activities to secure external funding. 
  • Engage in program development and curriculum reviews, and assessment of student learning. 
  • Provide support for program coordination and administration (e.g., recruitment, admissions, programming).
  • Collaborate with the department head to enhance academic programs.
  • Serve on Departmental, School and University committees; provide department representation during recruitment and university-wide academic advising events. 
  • Mentor students within the HWR, KT, HFI, HPE concentrations.

Required Qualifications for BOTH the Exercise Science and the Health, Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position:

  • Candidates who are currently ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by date of hire. 
  • Demonstrated evidence of an established or developing research agenda that informs teaching and practice in the Exercise Science and/or Rehabilitation field. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student body, verbally and in writing, with emphasis to a commitment to diversity. 

Preferred Qualifications for BOTH the Exercise Science and the Health, Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position:

  • Active involvement in professional associations and/or in partnerships in the field. 
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and negotiation skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse colleagues and students. 

The successful candidate for the Exercise Science position will be expected to:

  • Teach classes within the following disciplines: Exercise Physiology, Research Methods in Kinesiological research, Anatomy & Physiology, Biomechanics, Neurological Anatomy/Physiology, and Therapeutic Rehabilitation. 
  • Assist with clinical supervision of Exercise Science majors.
  • Assist with updating and developing CAAHEP certification reports for the accrediting bodies of the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
  • Possess clinical experience in the field of Exercise Science.

Required Qualifications for the Exercise Science position: 

  • Doctorate (Ph.D). in a related field such as: Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Human Movement Science, or Rehabilitative Sciences.
  • Evidence of or demonstrated potential for inclusive teaching that builds engaging, relevant, and authentic learning experiences for students.  

Preferred Qualifications for the Exercise Science position:

  • 3 or more years of experience in clinical practice in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiotherapy, Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, or Athletic Training.  
  • Registered as a Kinesiotherapist (RKT) through the American Kinesiotherapy (VA) will be given preference. 
  • Certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and/or National Athletic Trainers Board of Certification (NATA-BOC). 
  • A strong diversity and social justice orientation. 

The successful candidate for the Health Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position will be expected to:

  • Teach classes within the undergraduate Health & Physical Education P-12 teacher licensure program, such as:
    • Elementary and Secondary Physical Education methods
    • Health Education methods 
    • Content specific courses
  • Develop and revise curriculum in accordance with CAEP, VDOE, and SHAPE American Standards.
  • Supervise undergraduate student teaching and other filed experiences within local school districts.

Required Qualifications for the Health, Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position:

  • Doctorate (PH.D.) in Health Education or Health/Physical Education Teacher Preparation or related field from an accredited (U.S.) or certified (international) university.
  • Virginia Department of Education Educator License with an endorsement in Health/Physical Education P-12 or eligible.
    • VDOE licensure must be obtained upon contract offering. 
  • Eligible to teach pedagogical health/Physical Education courses including elementary and/or secondary methods, and physical education content courses. 

Preferred Qualifications for the Health, Physical Education P-12 Teacher Licensure position:

  • Evidence of 3 or more years of Health/Physical Education P-12 teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational and social equity, particularly in the health/physical education field. 
  • Evidence of or demonstrated potential for inclusive teaching that builds engaging, relevant, and authentic learning experiences for students. 
  • Experience designing health and physical education curriculum at the college/university level. 
  • Experience with assessment and CAEP accreditation.
