The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University invites applications for a full-time Language Instructor/Teaching Assistant in Japanese expected to begin August 1, 2023 and to extend through June 30, 2024. Language instructors (formerly Drill Instructors) teach small-group sections in Japanese language classes under the supervision of a course head and assist the course head in preparing class materials, grading, and providing individual assistance to students. This is a term appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal dependent on performance and curricular need.
Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in all modalities of Japanese (reading, writing, listening, and speaking); a bachelor’s degree or higher; experience teaching Japanese, preferably at the college level to students whose native language is English; and computer literacy.
Interested candidates should submit to the job portal at https://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/11828:
1. A cover letter, including a description of teaching experience and philosophy and comments on any efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging. 2. A Curriculum Vitae 3. Names and contact information of three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received. Candidates should also send a 20-minute video of the applicant teaching by URL through the ARIeS portal, or share the video file with eal@fas.harvard.edu.
All the above should be submitted by February 20, 2023. Please note that references will only be invited to upload letters of recommendation after a complete application has been submitted online. Recommendation letters are due by February 24, 2023.
Selected candidates will be contacted directly by early March for an interview to be conducted virtually.
